Have you ever thought about the material of your pots and pans? Have you ever looked at a pot or pan that has scratches and thought “that scraped up material was probably eaten by me or someone in my family.” I have! Not a nice thing to think about. I started researching brands that make safer cookware and came across GreenPan.

GreenPan is a great option because while being healthy, it’s still nonstick! Most nonstick pans use something called PolyTetraFluoroEthylene to cause the pans to be nonstick. This material, the PTFE, is known to decompose if the temperature gets to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. When the material decomposes, it lets off fumes that have been known to KILL small animals like birds. As you can imagine, that’s not good for us to breathe either!

Greenpan uses a different type fo technology, called Thermalon, which won’t release any fumes, even if the pan reaches temperatures as high as 850 degrees Fahrenheit.

The coating used on Greenpans is made of minerals, instead of palstic like PFTE is. Also, the process of applying the thermalon to greenpans, uses 60% less co2 emissions than it takes to coat pans with PFTE. There are several other great reasons why greenpan is better for you and the environment, you can read them here.

I received a small frying pan for review. The pan looked and felt just like any other pan, except the inside of the pan is a greyish color instead of black. I first used this to fry a sandwhich and used butter, without thinking about testing out the non-stick portion. The pan worked great, just like any other pan. Later I thought that I should have tested the non-stick abilities, so when I cooked scrambled eggs a couple days later, I didn’t use butter or grease the pan in any way. I didn’t have to scrape the pan AT ALL. I was really amazed by this, as even my ‘non-stick’ pans will stick when I make something like eggs, at least a little bit!

Overall the pan is great, and performs just like all my other pans – except this one is better for me, my family and the environment, so I’d choose it any day.
