I enjoy reading but don’t read as often as I’d like to. I just don’t seem to get around to it most of the time. However, when I was offered a spot on the Call me kate book tour, I knew I had to jump on. Call me kate is a young adult historical fiction book. It does a great job of letting you peek inside the life of a 14 year old girl who lives in a hard coal region during the civil war era. I of course took history classes in high school, but I did learn a bit about history in this book. It’s a neat way of learning about history too, so much more interesting than reading a history book. Here’s the book description:

Coming of age amidst the seething unrest of the Civil War era, feisty fourteen-year-old Katie McCafferty infiltrates the Molly Maguires, a secret Irish organization, to rescue a lifelong friend. Under the guise of Dominick, a draft resister, Katie volunteers for a dangerous mission in hopes of preventing bloodshed. Katie risks job, family, and ultimately her very life to intervene. A series of tragedies challenge Katie’s strength and ingenuity, and she faces a crisis of conscience. Can she balance her sense of justice with the law? Call Me Kate is suitable for readers from eleven to adult. The story is dramatic and adventuresome, yet expressive of daily life in the patches of the hard coal region during the Civil War era. This novel will appeal to readers of the Dear America series, as well as more mature readers who will enjoy the story’s rich context and drama.

Although I enjoy reading, I often get 3-4 chapters in and then the book slows down and I give up before the book picks back up again. This is a really well paced book, it kept me interested without going too fast. Overall I thought it was a great book to read as an adult and I love how it incoperates a history lesson into the book. Definitely a great read for teenagers! I completely understand why Call me Kate has 4.5 stars on amazon.

  • Emily – thanks for sharing ‘Call Me Kate’ with your blog readers. We appreciate your support of the book.

I agree with you – reading historical fiction makes history entertaining. It brings to life the stories of the people who lived through different time periods instead of a just-the-facts version of a history textbook.

I’m glad that you found the book’s pacing suited you. It’s always good to know that the progression of the story is on par for the reader.

    Best wishes,
    Nicole
