When a family member gets unable to live on their own, it’s never an easy choice to decide what to do for them. Most of us hope that we are never in the position of not being able to live fully independently, but we all know that for a lot of people that doesn’t happen. I hope to know what my parents’ feelings are about their living situations, before a choice needs to be made for them. When my grandma got sick with cancer, she expressed that she wanted to be cared for in her home until she passed. However, about a week before she passed she had gotten very ill and was barely speaking to anyone and seemed to be “out of it” for the most part. My grandma decided that he was uncomfortable with her passing in their home that he would continue to live in. This caused a lot of feelings to be stirred in my aunts and uncles, because many felt that it was right to honor my grandmas choice, while others felt that it should be left up to my grandpa. Thankfully, my grandma had a day where she felt better for a little while and was able to have a quick conversation about her care, and she then expressed that she was fine with going to hospice to end her life, which made things easier on us all. However, for many families who are looking into elder care, they don’t have the luxury of knowing what the individuals personal choice is. This is why I would encourage everyone to discuss the topic prior to a person growing very ill, so that their wishes can be kept if at all possible.

Unfortunately more and more of us are having to deal with this situation every day. We are very lucky to a wide variety of options available to us today that weren’t there 15 to 20 years ago. It is impossible to get everyone in a family to agree, as in the case you mentioned. It is best to come to an understanding of options and personal choices well before it becomes necessary. If at all possible, try to give more than one choice so the family can use several options depending on the circumstances.
