Ryan & I have tried out several varieties of cell phones, carriers and plans since we started dating. From what we’ve found, family plans are great for households with 4+ people who need a cell phone, but they aren’t very good deals for just two people. Many companies actually charge MORE for a family plan that includes 2 cell phones, than they do to have two separate bills. Obviously this has been a source of frustration for Ryan & I. We are currently obligated to a contract for another 9 months or so, but when we finish our contract out we are definitely going with prepaid. Right now we pay 100.00 a month for our two phones, and together we use maybe 700 regular minutes and 500 texts. Well over half of our usage is done between each other. I text him when he’s at school, etc. We are definitely not getting 100.00 worth. Plus, the phones that came free with our plan are really old and basic. We’ll be strongly considering going with tracfone next spring. Tracfone is a prepaid plan, meaning you aren’t bound to a contract, and there aren’t any activation or cancelationion fees. Meaning, we can try it out for a month and if it doesn’t work out as well as we’d hoped, we don’t have to pay any more money to the company, we just quit using our phones.
If you regularly make calls to someone who lives out of the country and you aren’t using a tracfone, you’re probably paying way too much! Tracfone has a list of 60 countries where you can talk to loved ones without using any more minutes than you’d use making a domestic call.
