As a teenager I was very particular about what I liked and what I didn’t like. This meant I was on the receiving end of a lot of gifts that weren’t items I would like, use or wear. At times i’d even get things from stores that I liked, but the item itself wasn’t something I was interested in. I used to love getting gift cards, because they were basically like getting cash except if they were to a clothing store or other place I liked to shop, I’d be much more likely to actually buy myself something instead of using them to buy groceries or something “practical” but not exactly a treat for myself.

As an adult, I still think that Gift Cards rock I most dread shopping for men. Most of the men in my life aren’t the type to go out and buy themselves a new pair of shoes, a coat or a new pair of socks. My instinct is to want to buy them the items they “need” instead of something they want, but most men aren’t going to get excited about receiving a new bag of socks. My dad for example, loves to fish and is very particular about the appearance of his yard. He spends a lot of time outside and I often look for gifts for him that are related to being outdoors. He also is a rather handy guy, and regularly helps friends and family put siding on their house, install a window, add on a deck or put down a new floor. However, with very limited fishing and yard work knowledge myself, it’s hard to guess what he might need or want in regards to his hobbies. For him, a gift card to Bass Pro Shops, Lowe’s or Menard’s is a great solution because I know he’ll find something he likes that is useful for him.
