It’s funny how occasionally I’ll accept something to review that is designed to be use in specific situations. So I kind of assume I won’t be able to use it in the real life situation where I’d use it, but I’ll test it out anyway. Then life shows up and provides me with the exact environment or situation needed to test it. That’s what happened with this Warm Traditions hot water bottle review.
Hot water bottles are an alternative to heating pads or other heat therapy options. I remembered hearing about hot water bottles even as a young child but my family never had one and I didn’t ever see one at anyone elses house either. I grew up using traditional heating pads but they left a lot to be desired. I got ear infections all the time as a child and am still prone to them now, and I remember using heating pads to deal with the pain but even on the lowest heat settings, the heat would be too strong for me and it was just uncomfortable. I’d also try to sleep with heating pads and then wake up a bunch of times because I was caught in the cord. So I’ve always been interested in looking for better solutions, though nothing else that I had tried would last more than maybe half an hour of warmth.
The day after my hot water bottle from Warm Tradition showed up, I had some really painful cramps. The water bottle was really easy to figure out, you just untwist the cap and fill it roughly 2/3rds full with hot water. Once you have enough water in it, you have to squeeze the bottom portion until the water comes to the surface, and tighten the cap on. If you don’t squeeze the bottle until the water comes to the surface, you’ll trap air in the bottle and it will be stiff and less comfortable to use. Once full, it takes a couple of minutes for the heat from the water to transfer through the bottle and for the bottle to feel warm.
I’ll admit that I was a bit surprised at how big the temperature difference is between other heating methods and the hot water bottle – the hot water bottle gets really cozy warm but never hot, even with me using water that is as hot as my faucet will go. For people who like the extreme heat, this might be a downside but for me, I feel it is a benefit. It allows me to use the water bottle without having to shift it around because the heat gets too strong. I also would feel better about using a hot water bottle with a young child because it is much less likely to feel too warm even to a young child. It’s a great temperature to just keep warm with while going to bed. I love cuddling with it as I drift off to sleep, and I don’t wake up feeling overheated as a result.
Before experiencing the water bottle, I wasn’t sure how it would manage to keep the water inside without ever leaking, but it hasn’t had any leaking problems. The water bottle is too large to be able to fit upright under my bathroom or kitchen faucet so I have to fill it in the bathroom to keep from filling the bottle on a weird or bent angle. The way that my bath tub faucet expels water is pretty messy instead of in a thin, straight line so I have had the fabric cover of the water bottle get wet each time I fill it but it hasn’t been a big deal for me, I just towel dry it as much as I can and the dampness left over isn’t a big deal for me.
