Ryan & I tend to be a bit behind the technology world most of the time. We don’t rush out and buy new gadgets very often, and wait around until the bugs are worked out and the prices come down before we buy. In the past year or so we’ve finally caught up to being slightly more modern though – with two smartphones, an e-reader and a tablet. To make sure that we’ve spent our money wisely we want to protect our devices as much as we can. Otterbox is a company that offers cases for smartphones and other devices like e-readers and tablets. Instead of being the generic “one size fits most” type cases that you’ll find at so many places (that seem to not work well for any given device) they are designed for specific models of devices only, so you know they will be a great fit.
While Otterbox has cases for a lot of the most popular devices like iphones, kindles, blackberries, etc we were unable to find cases for our cheaper, much less popular models. I have a Nook Simple Touch, which is the cheapest and most basic nook that is still being sold through Barnes & Noble. I was so slow to get into the e-reader world, that I hadn’t realized that there was an earlier nook version that they quit selling before I got mine in the 2012, called just the “Barnes and Noble nook”. I mistakenly assumed that because Otterbox sold a case for the Barnes and Noble nook and then a different case for the nook color & nook tablets, that the regular nook must be my nook. So, the Nook case didn’t fit the nook that I have unfortunately, so I wasn’t really able to test it as I would like to for a review.
The case has a polycarbonate (type of plastic that is very thin and lightweight but very durable) shell with a silicone “skin” that slips inside of the outer shell, and then the nook slides into the silicone.
The case also comes with a self-adhering clear screen protector.
The otterbox case isn’t designed to protect from water damage, but instead from bump and shock damage. The outer ports of the device are covered with silicone plugs. These plugs help to keep dust and dirt from getting into the ports from being damaged.
While I haven’t had the chance to use an Otterbox case with a device first hand, I love the concept of the products and hope that they will expand their selection to include the devices that I have.
