Eco-friendly products are becoming more and more common and readily available. However it seems that some types of green products such as eco-friendly watches are much harder to come by. Why that is, I’m not sure but when I came across Sprout, I was thrilled to find a company that specializes in making ‘eco-forward’ watches.
How can a watch be eco-friendly? First and foremost by choosing green materials. Sprout uses biodegradable materials such as corn resin, bamboo, cork, organic cotton. They also use mother-of-pearl made from non-endangered species, conflict-free diamonds and Swarovski’s Advanced Lead-Free Crystal. They also use Tyvek, a water and tear resistant fiber that can be recycled and fish skins (a by-product from fish that are caught for human consumption) for the straps. We also know that batteries containing mercury represent a danger both for our health and for the environment. Luckily, Sprout exclusively uses mercury-free batteries. All their products are also phtalate-free and lead-free. In concrete terms, it means that at least 80% of the materials used to make Sprout watches are low-impact, biodegradable, recyclable or renewable. Sprout’s commitment to the environment doesn’t stop at choosing the right materials. They are a member of the 1% For The Planet organization. They also support Riverkeeper and Trees For The Future.
Sprout makes watches for women, men, and kids. They also make gorgeous repurposed market bags out of 100% post consumer plastic water bottles. It takes approximately 8 bottles to make one bag. The bags are created to match some of their watch designs.
For this review, I received a beautiful Purple Owl Watch and a matching repurposed owl bag.
I was very curious about the materials used because when you look at my Sprout watch, it just looks like a regular watch so how are the green materials used exactly? The case, buckle, and some inner parts are made of corn resin. To me, it looked like any other kind of plastic but this corn resin is a durable material that will last for years but will completely biodegrade in a compost environment within 3 years. Organic cotton is used for the strap and mother-of-pearl is used for the dial. The lens is made of mineral crystal. Even the box in which my Sprout watch came is made from at least 80% post consumer fibers and is recyclable.
The owl design on the watch is very pretty. I like that the owl’s eyes and a tiny flower by its side are made of sparkly conflict-free diamonds. The strap was quite stiff at first but after wearing it for a few weeks, it’s getting more and more supple. This watch also comes in light green and grey or charcoal grey and blue. There is also white model with a corn resin bracelet.
The matching owl bag is charcoal grey with purple accents (trim and straps). The owl itself is light purple, cream and grey. I like that the fabric is thicker than most reusable bags made of recycled plastic. It’s a good size bag, measuring 15 in by 16 in. I used it as a grocery bag and also as a day bag with diapers, snacks, toys, etc. for my daughter. The only thing I would change is I’d like to have a couple internal pockets for small items like keys, cell phone, etc.
Overall, I am very pleased with both the owl watch and the matching bag I received. It feels great to have found an eco-friendly yet beautiful watch! The bag is so pretty, I want to use it all the time which I guess is as good as it gets when it comes to reusable bags!
