This is a Fashionista Events opportunity.
I’ve always been really selective about what music I listen to. I purchase individual tracts or albums online, add them to my MP3 player and connect it to the car instead of listening to the radio. I rarely find anything on the radio that appeals to me. As a teenager, I liked a song or two from dozens of artists, but rarely more than that. I like songs that I can really deeply relate to the lyrics. If songs aren’t relatable to me in particular, I look for really detailed songs that allow me to “step into someone else’s shoes” and see life from their perspective. I primarily find myself interested in rock and alternative because I tend to go for songs that have a lot of substance to them. A few years ago I came across the band Blue October and have listened to them a ton since then. Their music appeals to me because it’s all intensely personal. Although many of their songs don’t relate to me personally, I am amazed at how personal and real their songs are, so that’s what draws me in. Two of my favorites are For My Brother & The Worry list.
When I stray away from the rock or alternative genre, it’s usually because I find a song or artist that writes incredibly personal songs. I almost never listen to rap but I remember replaying Eminem’s Mockingbird video over and over when it came out because I was amazed at how personal it was. Warning: explicit lyrics.
Of course, most artists don’t completely throw themselves out there in their songs themselves. So I look for artists who give interviews or write books discussing the details of their songs. I recently came across the video Brynn Elliot — Notion Of Love EPK. It was really interesting to get to hear her explain the “story” behind so many of her songs and what they mean to her. Her music is so gentle and relaxing sounding, too.
Who is your favorite musician? Are you drawn to artists who write personal songs or who publicly share their personal connections to their lyrics?

I like such a wide variety of music but like you, I do not especially seek out rap. I was listening to country for many months last year, enjoying the story they tell in the song. Now I’m back to classical music which I listen when I’m focusing on work. I do like sampling music on Spotify and Mixcloud, and finding new artists.
