Most parents know only too well that getting the kids to bed can be a struggle. However, it is important for children’s development and the quality of their schooling that bedtimes follow a regular pattern. Choosing the right bedding for your children can prevent tears at bedtime and even make settling down for the night fun.
The most important part of children’s bedding is, of course, to ensure that it is warm and comfortable. Mattresses should be supportive, and it is worth looking for fabrics that are as soft as possible.Uncomfortable bedding can lead to a reluctance to settle down and lead to waking in the night.
A child’s bed space should be cosy, safe and welcoming, but above all, children should feel that it’s ‘theirs’. For this reason it is a good idea to involve children when picking bedding, so they feel they have some power and involvement in bedtime rituals, making bedtime less of a battle. However, there should be a word of caution: it is tempting togive in to a child’s wishes for the latest cartoon character bedding, which can be a costly mistake. Fads come and go, and children will soon lose interest in the ‘old’ bedding, and demand new covers.
Bedding should be selected to take into account the child’s changing tastes as they become older. Having to buy a new set of bedding every time a new cartoon character comes out can soon take its toll on parent’s wallets! Having bedding with engaging and bright colours adds an extra ‘feel-good’ factor to children’s bedrooms that kids will subliminally attach to bedtime, and simple patterns such as stripes and dots can be just as fun as ‘themed’ bedding. These types of bedding are more likely to stand the test of time without children becoming embarrassed by their bedroom décor as they grow older.
It is also important that bedding should be selected for its durability. Whilst it might be tempting to go for the cheaper options, repeated washing can take its toll on stitching and leave cheaper fabrics faded and drab. Spills and mess are an inevitable part of having children, and selecting more durable bedding will make more sense economically. Better quality brands will also retain their softness after repeated washes.
Popular online retailers also have a wide range of discounted children’s bedding from quality brands such as Catherine Lansfield, and the quality of the fabrics can help kids to get a restful nights sleep. One particular retailer whose catalogues I have recently browsed through also have their own reasonably-priced selection of bedding with some excellent ideas such as Union Flag duvets or football-themed bedding.
Both retailers cater for the tastes of both girls and boys, and the Catherine Lansfield collection can help parents and children select an overall theme for the entire bedroom. This can help to coordinate bedding with the curtains and other furnishings to help give children a sense of ownership when it comes to their bedrooms, and this helps children to start viewing their rooms as their den, rather than simply just the place where they are sent to go to sleep!

I think involving kids in the bedding purchases, if they’re big enough, is preferable. They will have it for a while and may sleep better with their own choices of bedding.
