Anyone who works from home will understand how important it is to have a space where you can be productive but also feel comfortable. If you are creating a home office, or redesigning an existing one then read on to find a few tips on how you should do it.
Home office on a budget
Nothing kills creativity and productivity more than sitting in an office or workspace that you know you spent too much money on. Instead of focusing on the job at hand you will be criticizing every bit that you think you could have gotten cheaper. So it makes sense to do your office on a budget, but that doesn’t mean compromising on style. Look for online offers, store discounts and sales. If you have a flair for being creative, you can look to upcycle old, unwanted furniture and turn it into something totally unique for your office.
Essential items
Every home office should be different as they should be designed to suit your needs and your tastes. However, there are a few items that will (or should) always be found in a fully functional workspace. A work area, usually a desk/table but whatever surface you work best at and a chair that supports your back. If you are going to work in that chair, it needs to work for you.
A tidy work space also makes for a more productive environment and so investing in storage for the items you need is worth while. Things like filing cabinets for anything that needs to be kept locked away, e.g. customer/client details, finance information etc. will help to keep your office running like clockwork. You can usually pick up decent office furniture at retailers like Tesco, they tend to be well-made and easy on the budget.

Use what inspires you
Even with having to incorporate these essential items you can still make your office a little extension of yourself. Whatever job you do from home, you need to be productive and you will work your best in an environment where you feel at ease. Finding furniture that suits your style and decorating in colors that inspire you will help to ensure you want to go to work everyday.
Remember it is your home
Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you need to make your office look just like an office. Most office workers hate their environment, and you are in the great position of being able to have your work space at home. Make it comfy, cosy and a place that fits in with your house, but is also functional in terms of your work.
If you are redesigning your home office try to think of it as a blank canvas. Think about what inspires you when you are working and try to incorporate these things into the room. Your home office needs to be somewhere you want to be, as the temptation to sneak out and put your feet up in the lounge is much higher when your lounge is just a few feet away!

Even though I don’t work from home, just sitting at my formal desk helps me get in the work mode to get things done. I have a large L shaped desk and it pretty much needs to stay in one place so I look for other ways to redesign the space.
