April 8th the movie High Strung will be coming to theaters. High Strung tells the story of two artists – Ruby Adams has been a classic style dancer for as long as she can remember. She gets a scholarship so she heads off to New York City. She doesn’t fit in very well at her new school.

Johnnie is deeply passionate about music and is improvisational and street smart. Like Ruby, he struggles to find his way in New York City. He strongly believes he has to make his way with his art to be happy in life. The two clash at first but then become close. They partner up in part of a dynamic dance crew called The SwitchSteps, and try to find a way to make their joint passion of dance and music to keep Ruby from losing her scholarship and to prevent Johnnie from being deported. They combine Ruby’s classic dance with Johnnie’s hip-hop contemporary dance moves to enter into a competition to win $25k to make their scholarship and deportation issues go away.

High strung movie

The movie is a must-see for anyone interested in dance, music or passionate artists in general. It’s also easy to relate to for anyone in the older high school or college years where they’re experiencing growing pains while learning who they are. Almost everyone feels like an outsider at some point, and High Strung is a sweet story about feeling out of place but finding your way with help from friends as well. I like watching movies that involve passionate people because it’s inspiring to be reminded that following your passions is not just possible but also worthwhile.

There is a twitter party for the movie at 9pm ET April 5th. To participate watch the hashtag #HighStrungMovie on twitter!

Check out the movie trailer below for a sneak peak. Visit the High Strung Movie website to find a theater near you that will be showing High Strung.
