I have been provided with a Nutrisystem plan in exchange for sharing my honest experience and results on my blog. All opinions are my own.
Ryan has been on Nutrisystem for a LONG time now. He’s started getting comments from friends and family members who are surprised that he’s still on Nutrisystem. It’s made us realize how many people think of weight loss programs as short-term fixes. Ryan will not stay on Nutrisystem forever, but you don’t have to use Nutrisystem (or any other plan) only in the short-term.

Ryan has chosen to stay on Nutrisystem long-term because it’s working for him. He isn’t yet at the weight he wants to get to, so why would he stop before he gets there? Plus, he understands that even once he reaches his goal weight, he will have to count calories, watch his nutrition, etc to maintain his loss.
How to keep going on Nutrisystem:
- Don’t be afraid to try the new entrees as they come out. Ryan learned early on that sometimes the yummiest Nutrisystem meals are ones that he didn’t really expect to like. As a result, when new menu items join Nutrisystem he will usually order one to try it out. Keeping a good variety keeps it from getting boring.
- Remember why you started. On rough days, Ryan reminds himself what he’s doing Nutrisystem to begin with. He wants to feel good and be healthy.
- Save your craving for your flex-meal. Nutrisystem has ‘flex meals’ as part of their plan. Flex-meals have some requirements such as how much protein, fiber and calories they contain but you make them from food you buy at the grocery store. If you’re struggling to stick with the plan because of a specific craving, find a way to work that food you’re missing into your flex-meal spot.
- Don’t buy food that doesn’t fit into Nutrisystem or that is too tempting, or keep it out of sight. This is kind of obvious if you live alone, but if the rest of your family is not doing Nutrisystem it can make things harder if they are buying foods that tempt you. When I buy foods that might tempt Ryan, I don’t store them in a place that he regularly looks. He doesn’t store any of his food on the lazy susan so I will store chips or other ‘bad’ foods there instead of in our regular cupboard area just so he doesn’t have to see them multiple times a day. We also skip grocery store aisles (or portions of aisles) that we don’t need to access, such as the candy aisle or the frozen pizza aisle.
- If you mess up one day, start fresh the next day. A lot of people feel like they ‘failed’ after making a bad choice for a single meal, or eating a days worth of bad food choices. Regardless of how long it’s been since you “fell off the wagon” you should always get up, dust off and start over. Making a bad choice for breakfast doesn’t mean the day is ruined if you make a better choice at lunch and dinner. You get to make fresh choices at each meal, what you ate at your last meal, or yesterday, or last week doesn’t change the fact that you make a fresh choice at your next meal.

When we decided to start eating clean, whole foods only, it was a complete lifestyle change for us. Weight loss was an added bonus, but long term health was the main goal.

These are all great tips! I can definitely see how it would be hard to stick to a diet plan when the rest of your family isn’t on it, but the way you deal with this is perfect. I have never really been on a diet, but I do make most of my three kids meals fresh so I don’t keep a lot of junk in the house. I do try to switch up dinners so no one gets tired of the same things though.
It’s hard to keep to a diet when the rest of the family wants to eat all these wonderful tempting treats. In order to stay on a diet, you really have to practice that willpower and walk away from these tempting treats – even when someone is wagging it under your nose.
