Fall feels like a transition season for me. Here in Michigan we have cold winters and warm summers, and spring and fall weather don’t really follow the calendar. I am a little jealous of women who get two months (or more!) of “leggings, boots and cardigan” weather. Once it’s too chilly to wear shorts, it becomes jacket weather really quickly here. Much like the weather, fall is a transition period for most families too. Going from lazy days of sleeping in and playing to waking up early for school, starting fall sports and activities, and fewer hours of daylight is a big switch. For younger kids, the days feel much longer because more is expected of them during the day, and they are seeing their parents less which can be stressful too.
To make back to school season a little easier, it makes sense to prioritize your time on what really matters most to you. Take short cuts where you can! My tips for making the fall season a bit smoother for busy moms:
- Prepare for the morning the night before. Have your children pick out their outfits at night, so you don’t have to rush them to pick clothes in the morning.
- Shower or bathe at night. Again, a big time saver when trying to get your sleepy-head ready for the bus (or to the car).
- Make lunch the night before for time-consuming meals. For snacks or treats, use convenient foods like Entenmann’s® Little Bites™ Snacks that are pre-packaged and ready to go. For sandwiches, get in a few grams or protein and fiber without hassle by using Nature’s Harvest® Bread.

4. Have time scheduled for family connections. If your little one is stressed, have a 15 or 30 minute period each night where you play a game or read together so your connection is maintained. Having meals around the table when at home is a great time to let everyone talk about their day as a group
5. Under-schedule your evenings and weekends. Try to leave a small gap in your schedule each evening. That way, if something goes wrong you have some wiggle-room in your schedule so everything necessary can still get done. If everything goes well, then you simply have some down time which is not a bad thing.
Now through September 13th you can enter for a chance to win a $10,000 savings bond! Visit the Life Of The Lunchbox sweepstakes page. The sweepstakes is sponsored by Entenmann’s® Little Bites™ Snacks and Nature’s Harvest® Bread. Both brands are convenient items to use for school lunches for parents interested in providing wholesome meals to their kids.

I also grew up in the Ohio/Michigan/Indiana area, with family still in Ohio and Michigan and they are all pros at making the most of the seasons. Planning and prepping is so key and having a plan B when things don’t go as planned is always a good idea.

Prepare the night before! I know this …. yet, it is rare for me to actually do this with much gusto.

Great tips. I am so glad you mentioned ”down time’. So many kids and parents are so overwhelmed with activities there is really no time to relax. It is so important to have some time in the day not to have anything to do, just enjoy some time together.
I live in the Midwest too, and with shorter days, you wake up in the dark and go o bed after dark. Your right, there is very little transition- well maybe at night! Its hot then pretty much cold.
