I have been provided with a Nutrisystem plan in exchange for sharing my honest experience and results on my blog. All opinions are my own.
I’ve mentioned in the past that some of Ryan’s favorite Nutrisystem foods are ones that he didn’t think he would like. That’s very true. He didn’t care much for chicken or turkey prior to beginning Nutrisystem, but he enjoys several entrees from Nutrisystem that include those meats.
There were also a couple of entrees that Ryan had assumed he would enjoy, that haven’t been at the top of his favorites list. One of these menu items is the burgers. Hamburgers are one of Ryan’s favorite foods generally speaking. He’s struggled with the Nutrisystem burgers a little bit though. The main reason wasn’t taste, but texture. The buns are rather flat, instead of having that sponge-like texture of most hamburger buns that you would buy at the grocery store. They don’t seem to absorb juices or moisture as much, either. The Nutrisystem burgers get microwaved while wrapped in a paper towel as per the directions. The paper towel helps absorb the moisture that comes out of the burger once it is heated. However, even with the paper towel quite a bit of moisture is left over.
This week, Ryan found a solution. He microwaves the hamburger, and then puts the burger in a frying pan for a little bit, and the bun on a cookie tray in the oven for a little bit. This helps to dry the bun off a bit, and get rid of the softness that was caused by the moisture. Most people would stop there, but he likes the fry the burger to get it well-done. Our family picks on him saying that he likes his burgers burnt. So if you aren’t a burnt-burger kinda person you could just skip the burger step and bake the buns for a bit to dry them out.
Do you have a sensitivity to the texture of any foods, such as bread products? How do you cook your food to match your texture preferences?

I wouldnt like the buns soggy either. The way he is doing it makes perfect sense to me. I would think one of those George Foreman grills would work well for the burgers and maybe for the buns. You can pick up one of the grills cheap we got one at a garage sale for a buck and boy they work great for thinner meats.

i dont care much for soggy buns, but i dont like my food particularly crispy either. the word ghostly has been used to describe my food. i do agree that most frozen food items benefit from some creative cooking methods to make them even better

Oh, I can relate. If it doesn’t feel right, it isn’t going to taste right!

Hey, I admire him for finding a way to continue to stay on the plan. He came up with a great solution.

I can’t stand soggy bread or buns. It actually makes me sick to my stomach. I do what Ryan does and throw them in a pan to cook up a little longer. I have a George Forman grill and it’s nice to even grill the bun right there on the kitchen table.

Wow that’s pretty interesting. I didn’t know that they even had hamburgers. Oh how I wish I could afford to do Nutrisystem.

I have to have my buns toasted and my burgers well done. A lot of lettuce, and tomatoes and onions on my burger or I will not eat it.

I’ve never tried these before, but they look great!

Good tips, if you have a toaster oven you could do the bun in there too.

I don’t eat bread because of the gluten but the burger patties would be good. I wonder if they have gluten free plans too or you just pick the food you like probably. I do steam of lot of my food to retain more nutrients.
Im not sensitive to texture per say, I just really like the food to taste as fresh as possible!! So I can imagine that a soggy burger would not taste fresh! Im glad he found a way to prep it that suits him!
