Thank you to Clear Ear for sending the OTO-TIP for review in exchange for my honest opinion in this review.

Earwax. Just the word makes most people shudder at least a little. Earwax is made in the outer ear canal by special glands. The medical term for earwax is cerumen. Why do we have earwax? It has several jobs: it protects and moisturizes the skin of ear canal, it contains special chemicals that fight off infections, and it acts as a buffer between the outside world and the eardrum. Earwax traps dust and dirt when they enter the ear canal. Many people don’t need to do anything to remove earwax, but some people (like myself, my husband and my daughter) produce a lot of earwax and a buildup of too much wax can cause issues like wax impaction that then needs to be removed by a doctor. Cotton swabs can injure the ear drum and ear candling is controversial and can cause burns. So, what is a person who wants to remove their excess ear wax to do? Try the OTO-TIP from Clear Ear!

I received an OTO-TIP to try. I used it on myself, my husband and my three-year-old daughter. It is labeled as safe for use for ages three and up. The tips are made of medical grade silicone, and it uses an automated spiral action to withdraw wax from the ear canal. If you are like me, right now you are probably thinking “Is this thing safe?” The Oto-Tip was designed with extensive medical consultation (including a Board certified ear-nose-throat specialist and head-neck surgeon) to ensure the safest, most effective product to remove earwax. There is a shield (green part) to prevent you pushing it too far into your ear and damaging the ear drum. It also has a break-away feature to prevent you putting too much pressure on your ear canal. It comes with five small and five large tips, all of which are easy to wash and are reusable.

Here is what Johanna Oliveros, a Family Physician, had to say about the OTO-TIP from Clear Ear:

“From a medical standpoint it is an excellent device, its spiral tip is smooth and soft, avoiding injury in the external acoustic meatus and tragus, which are the outer parts of the ear canal and the most susceptible to trauma, scratches and cuts with cotton swabs, pliers, catheters, the nails themselves or any element used when cleaning it.”

“The length of the external auditory canal ranges from 0.98 to 1.77 inches (25 to 45 mm), being shorter in children and longer in adults, and in the device the spiral tip does not exceed 0.78 inch (20 mm) for adults nor 0.59 inch (15 mm) for children, therefore it does not generate risk of tympanic perforation by itself. It’s pediatric presentation is not just shorter but also thinner, which avoids the risk of auditory canal trauma or discomfort in children.”

So, does it work? As you can see from the two photos above, yes it does! We (my husband, three-year-old daughter and myself) have all used the OTO-TIP and had luck removing wax from our ears. My husband used the large tips and myself and my daughter used the small tips. I have been told that I have small ear canals by multiple doctors throughout the years so I went with the small tips. The motor is very quiet and it feels kind of like a massage for the inside of your ear. My daughter doesn’t mind it at all. I like that you can use it one handed, which is great for use on yourself!
