I’m a huge fan of Smart Toys and Games! If you’re not familiar with this company, you should check them out. They offer some of the best single-player puzzle games (Smart Games, Tangoes, and Twisterz) as well as captivating magnetic building sets (SmartMax).

Magnets are fascinating for kids (actually, I find them fascinating as well!) SmartMax magnetic building sets are a great way to learn about magnets. Each set has long and short bars (and sometimes curved ones as well). The long bars have stronger magnets that make stronger connections and can carry or lift more weight.

Kids can also learn that magnets have north and south poles. Each cold colored bar has its north pole directed outward whereas each warm colored bar has its south pole directed outward. Since like poles repel and unlike poles attract, children learn to connect warm colored bars with cold colored bars. There are also gray balls that all bars are attracted to create angles when building.

The SmartMax collection has dozens of products from discovery sets for younger children to large barrels with a variety of bars, balls, and vehicle parts. They also have thematic sets like Flower Palace, Tow & Go vehicle set. For this review, I received the Build & Light set. It includes 20 medium bars, 10 long bars, and 2 long bars with LED lights as well as 13 balls and 2 clip-on panels. This set allows children to build larger structures and learn about physics in a fun way. Plus the bars with LED lights give constructions a very cool glow.

My daughter loves SmartMax magnetic building sets! This is her second one (she already had the Basic-25 set) and since all sets can be combined, she now has enough bars and balls to build impressive structures. She knows how bars ‘stick’ together and how she can join bars using balls but the physics of building still elude her so I often help her to build bigger taller structures but I know that in no time she’ll be able to do it all by herself.

I love how the SmartMax sets teach about magnetism as well as the laws of physics in a fun and innovative way. I also like that they offer both general and thematic sets which can be combined. The fact that the pieces are chunky means that they can safely be handled by younger children. Older children will also love to build amazing structures either by reproducing the ones presented in the included booklet or by using their imagination to create something unique. I think SmartMax building sets would make awesome presents this Christmas. It’s such a fun way to explore and discover magnets and physics.
