Naturepedic Organic Mattresses: Bedtime Routines To Help Kids Sleep Better + Naturepedic Quilted Organic Cotton Deluxe (Trundle) Mattress: Safe sleeping, chemical free

Growing up, I was never a great sleeper.  In part, I blame the fact that my parents had my sister and I sleeping on boxsprings on our bunkbed as opposed to actual mattresses, so I just could never get comfortable.  But I’m sure there were other factors as well.  Now that we’re parents to five young children, my husband and I have come to understand some of the struggles parents face with bedtime and getting kids to sleep well.  So here are some tips that have worked for us.

Bedtime Routines To Help Children Sleep Better

Bedtime Routines To Help Kids Sleep Better:

  1. Expectations~ We try to keep a set routine that we follow each night.  This way, the kids know exactly what to expect.  (NOTE:  This doesn’t necessarily mean bedtime is at the same time, just the routine.  As everyone knows, life tends to get in the way of exact timing.)
  2. Set A Timer~  I always try to give the kids a heads up when the clock is nearing bedtime so they have the chance to finish up any activity they are working on before heading up to bed.  Once I’ve given them the count, I’ve found that setting an alarm is a great way to keep them on task.  That way, once the alarm sounds, they know it’s time to head up without having me hound them.
  3. Nightly Tasks:  After heading up, it’s always straight to the bathroom where teeth are brushed and bathroom breaks are taken.  This cuts down on midnight wake-ups (for the kids but just as importantly, them waking my husband and I!).
  4. A Little Bit Of Play:  We often times let the kids play quietly in their rooms for 10 to 15 minutes before coming up.  This gives them one last chance to be active.
  5. A Little Bit Of Talk:  Once we head up, both my husband and I love to engage the kids in a short conversation.  They enjoy telling us about highlights from the day and it’s a chance for us to completely engage and listen without the daily distractions.
  6. Story Time:  Every night, either my husband, I, or both read to our kids.  Typically, each child gets to choose one book and then we also read from the Bible.  This is a great way wind down.  Plus, who doesn’t love a good story!
  7. Prayers:  By keeping routine and rounding out the night with a prayer, the kids are able to share if anything has been on their mind as well as give us the chance to focus on others who may be sick or hurting.
  8. Tuck In:  Each one of our kids LOVES to get tucked in.  We straighten the bed, pull up the covers, give hugs, and say good night.

While each family is different and no two kids are alike, we have found the above routine to work well for our family.  The kids know and look forward to it while my husband and I cherish it  because, all-to-soon, they will be grown and gone.

Now, on to the mattress aspect.  As more and more studies have shown, the ingredients and toxins people are exposed to on a daily basis is really troublesome and can lead to a host of problems.  This includes our mattresses, which many people spend 8+ hours on each and every day.

Our 11 year old has a trundle bed and I was on the hunt for a new mattress for her.  Since our younger daughter will be turning two this year, it’s only a matter of time before the girls will be bunking together and I wanted to ensure we found a really great mattress that would offer a good nights sleep while also being safe.  So I was thrilled when I saw that Naturepedic offers mattresses for every need, including trundle beds.

I’ve never had a Naturepedic mattress but I am due for a replacement. I’d like to get a smaller bed since my queen size bed hogs the space. Memorial Day or weekend is a good time to go mattress shopping so the seed is planted!

I have to say that being read to every night is a very good thing.

I totally agree that they need a good mattress. This sounds like a good one. I love your routine for the children too. My son has a routine like that too and it works for his family too.

I have been seeing these Naturepedic mattresses all over the web lately! I love that they are organic and have no harsh chemicals in them, it’s scary to see the list of “ingredients” that are in our mattresses. I definitely need to get one of these for my son, he’s still using a crib mattress in his hot wheels car bed, mainly because it’s plastic covered and therefore the best for his bad allergies. My daughter would love a trundle bed like yours does, how fun! 🙂 Thank you so much for your review!

Reading to our children every night was a routine that they loved. Each of them had a favorite book but they would almost ask me to read the story of how the elephant got its trunk from the Rudyard Kipling Just So stories. I read it so often there are still lines I can quote and my youngest is 52!

Love the routine. And this mattress looks and sounds amazing. It’s so great to see companies that provide safer products.

Getting new mattresses can be a really big deal, you don’t want to regret, even if you can exchange, return, etc, what a hassle! I have my parent’s mattress, it must be ancient! I’d love to get a new one, this is good information.
