Mattress-in-a-box companies seem to be getting more and more popular. As a 25-year-old, I have spent my entire adult life being able to get just about anything I want mailed to my door. I’ve purchased everything from food to batteries to headache medication online. Still, there are a few large items that seem just too big to get through the mail. Until recently, I thought mattresses were one of those items.
Eight Sleep – The Smart Mattress comes in a vacuum-sealed roll that fits in a box that is smaller than I am. It gets delivered to your door just like any other package. To open you simply remove the roll from the box, and then carefully cut the plastic open and the mattress will unroll and expand. It just takes seconds for it to become full size, and it is not inflated or ‘blown up’ in any way. Once it’s out of the package it’s hard to believe that it came in such a small box because it looks just like any other mattress. It is a 10 inch mattress with four layers of foam.
On the very bottom there is a 4″ layer of high density support foam. The next layer is 2″ of supportive transition foam to keep a consistent weight distribution to support all body types. The third layer is 2″ of contouring memory foam – designed to contour to your body and provide pressure relief. The highest layer is 2″ of reactive foam that bounces like latex but feels like foam. It’s designed to be comfortable and to keep you cool.
The Eight Mattress comes in sizes Full to California King. We were sent the queen sized mattress to review. The top of the mattress is very soft to the touch. One side of the mattress has a firmer mat, an that goes on the bottom while the sides and top are a really soft, white fabric. The mattress we were sent has a generous outer edge, so the top can actually move around a tiny bit. You can see the material gathered in the center right of this photo below.
The mattress is softer than other bed-in-a-box mattresses that I have reviewed in the past. I think it would be ideal for those who like a mattress that is slightly more soft than firm. We both found the mattress to be really comfortable. Of course, how comfortable a mattress is can be pretty subjective! Eight mattress developed their mattress based on data they had about human sleep, and they designed the mattress to be ideal for as many people as possible. However, if you purchase an Eight sleep mattress and decide it is not for you, that is okay! They offer a 100 day return policy so you get to test the mattress for over three months before you have to make a final decision.
The mattress can be used with a boxspring, or on any flat platform or slatted platform base.
In addition to their mattress, Eight also offers a sleep tracker. This is essentially a mat that tracks your sleep, and turns your mattress (any mattress!) into a smart bed. It collects data bout your sleep and even has a warming function to give you the most comfortable sleep possible.

I would love one of these for our bed and one in the RV too! The one in our bedroom is so so so hot, we cook at night! The one in the RV is hard and pokey, just not comfy at all.

I have been hearing a lot about the mattress in a box. I appreciate your review, we have been wondering what it’s like. When you can’t try it out it’s hard to know what it will be like. I think we would like it, time for a new mattress so we have to decide.
I have seen mattresses in a box a lot lately too! But it still amazes me how they are able to package them so small and how quickly they grow! I have never owned a truck so big furniture items have always been a hassle to buy, love this revolutionary idea! 🙂
