For those of you who have been following my blog for a while, you might remember the headaches we dealt with when we were trying to get moved in to our current apartment. We had issue after issue but after about 3 months of phone calls, appointments and running around, we finally got the OK to move in, but they couldn’t put us on the lease because they attempted to run a background check on my boyfriend but they got the wrong guy. That guy had a felony, so that guy couldn’t get accepted to live in our apartment. So even though they caught their mistake and were able to run a background check on my boyfriend, which came back totally clear, they said we couldn’t sign the lease, but we could move in and be listed as ‘occupants’. So that’s what we did. At that point we were just thrilled to get the OK to move in.

Yesterday registration for spring classes opened up. If you are unfamiliar with the system, it basically is set up so that registration for classes opens at a set time and date, and everyone sits online waiting for the clock to turn so they can get the classes they want. Typically if you aren’t there that first day, you get a really rough choice of classes. So I was there waiting.

I tried to log in and I got an error messaging saying that there is a restriction on my account and I can’t register for classes because of it, and gave me a phone number to call. I called and the lady said that the restriction was there because they realized that I had given them an address (my current address) but that it did not match the address on my state ID. Which is true, they do not match. So they needed me to prove where I live by bringing in  lease. Okay, I thought, I can do that.

I get to the school, only to realize I forgot the paper at home and had to turn around and come back to get it, and then go back to the school. Sigh. I walk in and wait in line behind a ton of other people, and stood waiting for over 45 minutes. I get to the lady and she says ‘well you didn’t sign the lease’ and I said right…but I’m listed as an occupant’. She replies “Oh well you have to sign the lease for it to be considered proof of residency.” I explained,”Well I can’t sign the lease. So what am I suppose to do?” She says “Well you can bring in a different proof of residency”. I say “Okay well what else can I bring in that is acceptable proof?” She says “Well, a mortgage would work” I resist the urge to laugh. “Well, I’m renting the place so I don’t have a mortgage” She says “Or a heat bill, or another type of legal document that shows your address like a wedding or divorce paper, or a college acceptance letter’

Well, when I applied for college I was living somewhere else, so I don’t have any of those forms of proof. She says she’s sorry but I’ll have to come up with some kind of accetable proof or she will be unable to lift the restriction.

So I go to my apartment mangers office and explain to her that being an occupant wasn’t good enough for the school, and that they are not allowing me to sign up for classes. She says ‘well your name is on the lease, why does it matter if you sign it? It’s a legal document that shows you live here’ I said yeah I know, I feel the same way but that’s what they said. She sys ‘Oh. well I’ll just draw up a lease and have you sign it then’

5 minutes later I was out the door, signed lease in hand. Seriously? I fought for over 3 months to sign the lease and I was told at least 15 times that there was nothing they could do, that it was simply not possible.

However, I am very glad that the whole headache is 100% behind me now. Woo hoo!

Red tape and rules can be a bit ridiculous at times to say the least. You understand the necessity for rules, but at times they don’t make any sense.
