Ryan’s dad became wheelchair bound about six months ago. Since then, we have realized how the huge majority of the world just isn’t set up for wheel chairs. Ryan’s dad is in his 50’s and of course wants to still be out and about like he used to be, but it’s hard for him to get in and out of cars, and we’ve found that it’s hard to get around even when we arrive somewhere. I’ve been amazed at how many public places have sidewalks that don’t have a ramp. So to get onto the sidewalk he has to stand up out of his wheel chair, have someone move the chair, and then get back into the chair. He can manage this but it’s very difficult. For someone who isn’t able to do so, they might have to be lifted, perhaps making the situation impossible. What’s even more frustrating is prior to visiting a location, there’s no way for us to know what struggles we will face with his wheelchair. Thankfully, when it comes to vehicles, there is an organization designed to help people find the right car for them. Disabilities can vary so much, and so can disabled vehicles, so it’s important to find the right fit. I know that companies tend to be driven strictly by profit, so I would be leery of believing the recommendations of a disabled vehicle company. That’s where NMEDA comes in. NMEDA is a non profit organization that’s goal is to promote safe driving and equipment for disabled people. NMEDA teams up with disabled vehicle dealers who adhere to the standards of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Additionally, NMEDA has some dealers who are Quality Assurance Program (or QAP) Dealers. The QAP is the only existing nationally recognized association for the adaptive mobility equipment industry. They believe that in order to satisfy customers, companies must have a systematic and documented approach to quality.
