On Friday I had a dentist appointment. I was leaned back in the chair with tools in my mouth when the dental assistant squealed and jumped back, frantically. “Was that a TOOTH?” she says.

Um, what? a tooth? where?

Turns out, a white spider came down from the ceiling and landed on her knee. So we laughed, the spider crawled a few feet away and she kept a close eye on his movements. I forgot about it after we got back home until I look over on the wall and see a small grey spider.

In the 14+ months that I’ve been living here, this only makes the second spider i’ve ever seen here. We live on the third floor and so bugs (other than flies or mosquitoes) simply aren’t a problem. So I thought it was weird that I had a run in with two spiders in one day.

Then, a few hours later I see something crawling across the floor. This time it’s a fuzzy, black spider. Three spiders in one day??

And lastly, the next morning we hop in ryan’s moms car to head to lakeĀ MichiganĀ for her birthday and when I roll down the window a spider crawls up from inside the door where it meets the window! So, I think spiders were definitely out to eat me this weekend.

We went to Grand Haven, which is an extremely busy, crowded part of Lake Michigan but it’s always absolutely gorgeous there. When we first arrived the sign said the water was 70 degrees and it was a green flag, which meant basically zero waves. Of course, the air was hot so the water still felt cool but it was much warmer than usual for Lake Michigan which was awesome. Later on, out of nowhere the wind picked up a lot and it got changed to a red flag and really awesome waves. So we went out and stood in the waves, trying to force ourselves to stay upright despite the waves nearly knocking us over. Slightly dangerous but tons of fun.

I knew this would be my last time swimming this summer, so it sort of feels like fall now. Kinda sad because the summer has went by so fast, but I love fall weather. I’m so much more comfortable in jeans and a hoodie.

  • I am sad that beach weather is coming to an end up here, and I didn’t even get to the Lake half as much as I usually do. BTW, I envy your three spider a day life, I run into about 3 an hour here.

My MIL lives in a woody area and a river runs through her backyard, so they have major spiders, mosquitos, and all kinds of other bugs too. She pays to have pest stuff put on her yard in the spring and also treats all along the bas eof her house where the basement and first level meet, as that seems to be a problem area. But it only helps so much. So I feel for ya! I could never move into a woody/swampy area just because of the bugs. They make me paranoid. haha :).

  • I love Grand Haven. I used to go there every summer. We recently took my kids for the very first time.

It’s so gorgeous there, but the large crowds are a turn off for me though – I get a bit anxious in crowds. It’s my MIL’s favorite place in the world so we end up there at least once a summer.

I can do without spiders. Our house is covered with them. Oddly enough, the only ones that don’t bother me are the big black, yellow and white garden spiders.
I grew up on Lake Champlain in NY, the other Great Lake. We had a great beach and we too looked forward to the days when the wind would pick up and we would get good waves.

The only ones that don’t really bother me are daddy long legs. The tiny, fuzzy ones are the worst to me. Well, here in michigan anyway. I’ve seen pics of florida spiders that are absolutely AWFUL. lol.

It’s funny that you mention the garden spider. My mom has found those a few times in her gardens but we never knew what type they were and were kind of amazed and disgusted by them at the same time. Had never heard anyone else describe seeing spiders like that, but when I googled ‘garden spider’ the images that came up are definitely what she’s gotten a few times.

It is really all relative. I really don’t like spiders and am allergic to their bites. However I lived in the tropics for 3 years while in the Peace Corps. Many of the spiders there were the size of tarantulas. They were just too big to squish. We called a truce for three years and I only killed one. It was blocking the door out of my bedroom. When I tried to nudge it out of the way with my umbrella, it reared up on its back legs and flared its fangs. Sorry, not going to put up with that. The mosquito net was really to keep everything out. Several mornings I rolled over to face a tarantula sized spider on the wall at face level. I don’t get as upset now as I used to when I encounter spiders.
