The Transformers Kre-o Battle For Energon set has 379 pieces and allows you to make Optimus prime as a robot or a truck and Megatron has a robot or tank. Neither robot is able to transform into a robot or truck but you use the same pieces for the robot as you do their tank/truck. The youngest of my older brothers is 8 years older than me so while they were into building toys I didn’t really pay much attention to them as a kid so I am not real familiar with building toys. Yet, I was impressed with how much “stuff” the finished sets can do. For example, the truck door opens, the finished robot shoots a missile, the legs can move to “walk”, the claw hand can be opened and closed, the truck and tank can both be rolled across the floor, etc.

Ryan said that as a kid, he always looked for building sets that had a lot of ‘standard’ pieces that could be used to create items from his own imagination instead of being quirky pieces that only worked for building one specific thing. While some pieces of this set are specific to transformers, there are lots that could be used for other projects. The pieces are compatible with Lego brand so you can combine your Kre-o and Lego kits to come up with new ideas.

The building of each robot, the truck and the tank each took Ryan about 45 minutes or roughly 3 hours total. Based on this and the number of pieces and how tiny they are, I think the age recommendation of 7 is a stretch. I certainly think a 7 year old could do this set with an older brother or adult, I think it would be hard for them to have the attention span and patience to do this set alone. Also, Ryan nearly lost pieces a few different times so keeping the pieces organized through to the finish would be challenging for a kid as well. I do think the set would be a great to give as a shared gift for a father and son, brothers, cousins etc. It could be used as a fun way to bond.
