As an introvert, I often need to consciously do things to de-stress after a long day, especially if a lot of social interaction was involved. Sometimes, I immediately know what I want to do to relax and other times I don’t really feel up to doing any of it, so I just convince myself to pick something to help get in a better state of mind. Here are 5 of my top go-to ways to decompress.
1) Sew, Draw or Paint. For me, creating art is a huge stress reliever. I like how it keeps my brain “on” in a healthy, positive way without adding to my stress or emotional exhaustion. There’s something about pulling something creative or artistic out of my brain that just makes me feel like I have hit the reset button on my emotions. Plus, when I’m done I (usually!) have a nice creation to enjoy looking at or using.
2) Reading. Reading is a great way to de-stress seems how you can “travel” to anywhere and leave your own world behind. When I have a long day and get home late, I use reading as a way to leave the stress from my own life behind while getting my brain relaxed for sleep.
3) Venting: sometimes, there’s no great option for getting the chaos and stress of the day out of my head other than spilling it all out for someone else. For me, this almost always means Ryan. When I have a chance to sit down with him and tell him about my day, detail by detail, the ups and downs, I usually feel so much lighter and relaxed afterwards. This is particularly important if something negative has happened throughout the day, that I won’t be able to “get past” without dealing with. Some things have to be addressed instead of just distracting yourself or ignoring it. When that’s the case, pouring my heart out to someone I trust is the best course of action to take.
4) TV: Sometimes, I just need to completely distract myself and other times I just want to “turn my brain off”. When I need some distraction, I like to watch in depth tv shows or movies. When I just need to turn my brain off, a silly, surface level comedy is a great way to relax without having to really think or get my brain working.
5) Video games: For me, video games are a way to leave my own world and join into a fantasy video game world. Whether it’s a basic “collect the coins and get to the end” fun game or an adults-only video game like Far Cry 3, video games can prove to be a great way to escape and de-stress. Ryan has been talking about Far Cry 3 since it was released last month, so we were excited to see it listed as today’s (January 22nd) gold box deal – meaning it’s $34.99 which is 42% off. You can check out Far Cry 3 on Amazon. If you want to try to win, 5 people who tweet the following will win a copy!

It is great to decompress before things get to be too much! I like the venting and TV. I have also learned that walking can be a great way to decompress!
