The founders of Tropical Traditions are Brian and Marianita Shilhavy. Marianita is a degreed dietician whose family is from the Philippines. In 1998, Brian and Marianita and their three children returned to the Philippines. At that time, the coconut industry was very depressed and coconut farmers were no longer able to provide for their families. Although income associated with the sales of coconut and coconut products was very low, that didn’t turn the older native population away from continuing to rely on coconut oil as their only dietary oil. Brian and Marianita quickly noted that older generations who were using coconut oil on a regular basis continued to be very active and healthy.
It didn’t take long for Brian, Marianita and their three children to see the health benefits themselves. Wanting to offer this healthy alternative to others, in 2000 they launched their products online. Although it may have been easier and more lucrative to turn to a more mechanized production method, Brian and Marianita made a conscious decision that Tropical Traditions would continue to use the same traditional handmade processing method that had been handed down thru the generations.
For our review, we received the Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil. Living in Oregon, we have a long rainy season. During the winter months when it’s cold AND rainy, it’s easy for skin to become cracked and dry. It’s imperative to keep skin moisturized during these months. I was thrilled to receive the Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil during our fall/winter months so I could put it into action ON my skin. What a wonderful way to keep my skin feeling luxurious and moisturized! Immediately upon getting out of a warm shower/bath, I apply the coconut oil to my skin. Even if I happen to put on a bit too much, it is quickly absorbed and doesn’t feel greasy at all. It is particularly useful on dry feet. There’s nothing better than apply the Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil to my tired feet and then donning a pair of warm socks.
Seeing how well the Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil moisturized my skin, I quickly got the idea to use it on our wood cutting boards and teak wood dining table. Just as I suspected, it gave the wood a moisturized glow and has protected it from our daily use and abuse.

Tropical Traditions are on facebook and twitter.
Hello, my name is Laurie. My family and I live near the Oregon coast. When we aren’t at work, in school, or on the volleyball court, we enjoy traveling, cheering for our favorite sports teams, playing outdoors, and checking off items on our bucket list. We are lucky in that both sets of our parents, as well as our siblings and their families, live within an hour of us. We get together often to help one another out, celebrate milestones, and go on adventures together.

Oh, I want some of this for my dry, cracked heels! They are so bad, I hate putting socks on!
