*I was sent two gift cards in exchange for this post. All opinions are my own.
As a child, I remember visiting some museums and being SO incredibly bored. So when we had a field trip planned for a museum, I was bummed. When I got there, I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed myself, though! They had a lot of visuals that could be passed around and touched, and this really made the experience come alive for me. I think most children are hands-on learners and it’s too bad that most museums don’t offer hands on experiences for children because I think it could help a lot.
History Hero is an app that is designed to be used while at select museums so that your child can use a phone or tablet to play a game while making their way around the museum and learning all kinds of facts. It’s a great way for museums to be educational for children while preserving items (and not risking them being damaged when touched) but still allowing the child to have something in their hands to keep them interested. The storyline in the app is that you are a hero and your job is to save history. You follow clues to find important artifacts in the museum (or other historical destination such as historical churches) and answering questions about the artifacts. The app is aimed at kids 4-7 with parental help and 8-12 through teenage/adult.
Currently, the history hero app has locations in Chicago, Washington DC, New York, London, Paris and Rome. Between these cities, there are 28 different locations that you can use History Hero at! The locations include:
- Chicago: Art Institute of Chicago and Field Museum of Natural History
- New York: MoMA, Met and Museum of Natural History
- Washington DC: Mall and Monuments, National Air & Space Museum, National Gallery of Art, Museum of American History, National Museum of the American Indian, Museum of Natural History and Smithsonian Castle
- London: British Museum, Museum of Natural History, National Gallery, Tate Modern and Tower of London
