Thank you to Sneakz Organic for providing me with product, free of charge, for review. All opinions are my own.
We currently have four children and I consider two to be really good eaters, one mediocre, and one extremely picky. I do my best to encourage healthy eating habits and serve home cooked meals each day with rare exceptions but am still always on the search for ways to include more nutritious items in our daily diets.
4 Ways To Incorporate Healthy Diets For Kids
1:) Add Veggies to the dishes your family likes. There are lots of recipes and cook books out there that use the method of dicing up vegetables and adding them to a dish. This method takes away the “scary” look of vegetables because the kids can’t see them. Plus, by adding onions and other yummy vegetables, the end result usually tastes better! When I first got married, I didn’t think I liked onions so I omitted them from the lasagna recipe I used. Once I finally decided to give the recipe a try in all its glory, I found that the sauce mixture was much tastier with the diced onions included!
Homemade Pizza Tip: One thing I have done is cut up Kale really small and sprinkle it over my pizza sauce before adding the rest of our toppings. While I have to be careful because Kale can give a dish a bitter taste if I use too much, it’s extremely healthy and I liked knowing I can get my kids to eat some.
2:) Juice Fresh Fruits and Vegetables. We purchased a juicer and would make our own fruit and vegetable juice for our family from time to time. While the kids were not thrilled with the vegetable versions, they thoroughly enjoy the fruit concoctions. Our vegetable juice would consist of: carrots, celery, and apples. Our favorite fruit version consists of: pineapple and oranges. While this is a healthy option, it is quite a bit of more prep work.
3:) Serve and serve again. I never ate much for fruits or vegetables growing up. It wasn’t something that was served often in our home with the exception of mashed potatoes and corn. So, once we started having children, I decided I wanted to make a change. I made a conscious decision to try salad. While my bowl would only consist of lettuce, cheese, and croutons starting out and I would only eat a couple bites, I now love salad and make myself a large bowl often. I have even grown to love a variety of lettuces and spinach as well as onions and peppers on my salad. So almost every day for lunch, I make salads for our whole family. Our 2 year old mainly picks out the tomatoes, peppers, and cheese to eat but at least he is getting the option to try it over and over again. For our pickier eaters, I do allow the option for “special orders” on their salads. Our 9 year old sticks with the ground up nuts, tomatoes, cheese, and croutons while our picky eater prefers cheese and croutons only. This way, I don’t force food on the kids but they still get to see everyone else eating yummy salads.
Tip: Keep serving and giving kids the option to try healthy foods. They may surprise you some time and begin liking them!
4:) Sneakz Organic. For an easy healthy option, pick up some Sneak Organic flavored milk. Our extremely picky 3 year old especially loves this product and I like knowing that he is getting some of the nutrition he needs.
