I used to use cell phone service that locked me into a contract. I did it because I thought it was the only way to get reliable service. I didn’t like how I had to wait so long to get a new phone, and I didn’t like all of the fees that I would have to pay if I wanted to change to another plan or if I went over my alloted amount of minutes or texts. For the last few years I’ve been using prepaid plans that save me money and I’ve been impressed with the coverage. I haven’t tried Straight Talk Wireless before but after reading about it today it has certainly caught my eye.

Straight Talk Wireless is a cell phone service that is available through Walmart. They have a $45 plan that includes unlimited talk, unlimited text and 3GB of data. That’s more high speed data than any other $45 plan.

So…how much is 3GB of data? It equal to…

85 hours of Google Maps usage

That’s enough data for me. Anytime that I hear about a new cell service, I worry about coverage in my area because I live in a rural area. So I was happy to hear that instead of having their own towers, Straight Talk Wireless relies on other large phone network towers. If you have good coverage with another carrier, you can use their Bring Your Own Phone program. The program lets you bring your phone, phone number and network with you.

Straight Talk Wireless can be a great option for parents with tweens or teens who are just getting their first phone. It’s less of an investment and if you decide to discontinue using the service over summer break or as a loss of privilage. Plus, you don’t have to pay big cancellation fees when you discontinue use like you would under a contract. If you want to pick the service back up a month or two later you can, again without excessive fess or trouble.

Straight Talk Wireless can also be great for older teens who are working for paying for their own phone. If they don’t have the extra cash one month they can skip a month of service and pick it back up the next month.
