Reading came easily to me as a child, and I loved to read. I think that a big reason why school was easy & fun for me was because I was a good reader. I know many children who struggle to get started reading early on, and begin to associate reading as a hard and negative experience. This leads them to avoid reading for fun, so they fall behind their peers. I think it’s really important to notice when kids are reluctant readers and to find the books that “crack their shell” and help them enjoy reading. A few reasons why I feel that Ripley’s Believe it Or Not books are great for reluctant readers:
Lots of vibrant pictures. The images thorough the book are sharp and brightly colored. Many of them are shocking or bizarre so they really grab your attention and pull you in.
Lots of mini stories. You don’t have to sit and read the book from cover to cover (or even page to page) because each page includes several small snippets. This makes the overall book less intimidating because it’s less time-consuming. It also is great for kids with attention-span struggles because each story “starts fresh” on a new topic so they don’t get bored.
Interesting information. Even for kids who don’t start out as reluctant readers, it seems common for boys in the 8-15 or so age range to feel apathetic towards reading. The strange, creepy, gross, bizarre facts in the Ripley’s books has a good chance of being of interest to that same crowd.
Ripley’s Believe It Or Not puts out a new book every single year. This year’s book is called Reality Shock and is already available for sale on Amazon and at other stores. If you have a reluctant reader in your life, be sure to check it out.
