At 19 months, Kelsie is very interested in being part of what everyone else is doing. In particular, she wants to be included in what her four-year old brother Drew is up to. This includes sitting where he sits. As a result, there started to be tension between the kids because Drew had a child-sized chair that is too small for them to sit in together. I knew that a great christmas gift for Kelsie would be a chair of her own but she’s still on the lower side of the percentile chart so she’s too short to easily climb into most chairs designed for kids so I started looking for a baby or toddler chair. I knew that it needed to be low to the ground and I hoped to find something cute and sturdy as well. I found the perfect chair from Cotton Tale Designs.
Their “baby’s first chairs” are really low to the ground so that babies can use them as soon as they are able to sit up on their own. The chair comes in several different fabrics. Kelsie got the “Tula” which has a black with white polka dot fabric that covers most of the chair with the piping being a pink with orange polka dot. It’s a perfect size for Kelsie at 19 months. From the first day that she had it she knew exactly how to kick back and relax in it. I still laugh when I see her slouching in her chair with a drink or a snack like a grown up in a recliner.
While the chair isn’t intended for kids his age, Drew (age 4) sometimes sits in the chair and it supports him without flattening like other foam-based chairs would. If would imagine that Kelsie will get about another year out of this chair, or possibly til her third birthday if she stays on the petite side.
The cover unzips from the chair and can be machine washed for easy cleaning. It’s small enough and lightweight enough that Kelsie drags it around from place to place with her. She will even drag it over to a pile of toys so that she can sit and play without having to sit directly on the hard floor.
If you have an older baby or younger toddler on your gift-list this year a Baby’s First Chair is a cute but practical chair. My sister has reported that she was able to remove the cover and wash it and put it back together without a problem which anyone with a baby or toddler will know is a huge plus!
