Growing up, I have some very fond memories of a few teachers from school.  I still remember my kindergarden teacher, Mrs. Erlander, who was so nice and was always ready with words of encouragement and a compliment.  I always looked back fondly at my time in her classroom and even had the Christmas gift, a little Coca Cola Doll, she had given me until we moved when I was 13 and it got misplaced.

Ironically, I then had her husband as one of my teachers throughout my high school years!  He turned out to be just as passionate of a teacher and was dedicated to his students in the same manner.  While we didn’t always agree on things, he would always hear me out.  It was so rare to see a teacher have the same respect for his students as he expected them to have for him.  On the rare occasion where he was found to have provided the wrong information, he wasn’t afraid to admit it.  It was so refreshing to enter his classroom each day knowing he would have a great attitude and lots to share.

It’s so wonderful to feel appreciated by students and parents. We had our teacher appreciation lunch early this year because our principal is being transferred to another school midyear. The parents cooked for us, so we had all sorts of food from their cultures. We felt so loved and appreciated!

  • I still remember my 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Barnes, reading to our class after lunch every day! It was my favorite part of the day! I still remember when she read the book Johnny Tremain to us and made me fall in love with historical fiction. I could hardly wait for the next school day to hear another chapter!

#LakeshoreCelebratesTeachers My Elementary school PE coach. He truly cared about each and every child. Always wanted to make you smile and remember to be positive. He is now a college professor and treats his adult students the same exact way, and still keeps in touch with many of the students he used to coach. He is one of those teachers that you don’t forget!

I would say my sons grade 2 teacher. In order for him to understand his math, she brought it to his way of understanding. What is 4 ÷2? He had no idea. If your dad has a board and cuts it in half what will you have? He knew that right away 🙂

  • I remember my 1st grade teacher mrs Hollingsworth. she was bigger and she since has died but I will always remember her kind heart.

She would explain the Physics in StarTrek and had use design satellites. It was a fun class… where it might not have been.

My then 16 year old daughter was in a bad accident last March (my 18 year old daughter was as well, she was driving). The accident left my daughter with a traumatic brain injury, it’s a miracle she’s alive as she was dead at the scene. She already had a slight learning disability and received a few accomadations at school. However, her teacher of record, Mrs. Cowley, came to the hospital to visit and do a discreet assessment, she has helped my daughter so much. She goes to bat for her to ensure teachers are doing everything listed in her IEP, she contacts me right away if she sees any issues, and gave up a lot of her summer to do summer school sessions so my daughter could finish her sophomore year and start as a junior this year. As a result of her help, and God working miracles, as well as my daughter working so hard, she’s still on target to graduate with her core 40 diploma and get into college!
