I have been provided with a Nutrisystem plan in exchange for sharing my honest experience and results on my blog. All opinions are my own.
You may have noticed that I took a few weeks off from posting about Nutrisystem. We had a bit of a mix-up with ordering so Ryan ran out of Nutrisystem food before getting his next order. We’ve been working on trying homemade meals that align with Nutrisystem for several months now. We know that eventually Ryan will end the program and we need to be able to continue similar meals at home in order for him to avoid gaining weight back. For the 2.5 weeks or so that he was without Nutrisystem food, Ryan did great making homemade meals that watched calories and fiber/protein requirements.
Ironically, last weekend when the new order arrived was when he started to struggle a bit more. We had multiple stressful events come up in our personal lives. I don’t want to go into details publicly but we’re all fine it’s just been a long, emotional week. Ryan realized that he was struggling to eat the Nutrisystem food and mentioned that to me. He went on to explain that he was just feeling stressed and he wanted to eat other food because of that. I asked him if he was sure he wasn’t just because he had been off the plan for a few weeks. He said he knew it was from his emotions because it wasn’t that he doesn’t care for the Nutrisystem food. He likes it, it’s filling and there’s plenty of variety. Plus, he wasn’t eager to eat the healthy, balanced meals he had been making at home for the previous couple weeks – he wanted junk food.
I knew that Nutrisystem was really smart for including a wide variety of food. It allows for picky eaters to still find a variety of entrees that they like. The variety combined with how easy it is to make, how each entree is pretty filling, how you get to eat (or snack) every few hours throughout the day really results in no excuses being left. Ryan can’t say he’s left hungry after Nutrisystem. He can’t say he’s bored of eating the same meals over and over. He can’t say it’s too much work. This is genius because the only real option left is “I just want junk because i’m stressed.”
While it would be great to avoid feeling that way, i’m glad that Nutrisystem at least makes it obvious what is going on. On other plans with a lot of repetitive food, or food that leaves you hungry, I imagine it makes it really tough to know when you’re struggling emotionally with wanting to eat, and when your body is feeling deprived. I’m so glad that isn’t the case with Nutrisystem. Understanding the problem is the first step in being able to fix it!

I considered Nutrisystem but I worry about not being able to transition to regular food. I do better with Weight Watchers.

It’s really a good thing that he was tested, especially when his willpower was down, so he knows he can do other things to substitute that yearning for junk food. It’s so much more than the food and it’s one of the hardest things to do, transitioning into your own meal plans, with all the temptations.

So how did you deal with the struggle?

I am sorry there were issues in your lives. It is good he is smart enough to recognize them. I hope all is well with his eating soon.

That’s a good point. One of the main problems with these programs can sometimes be how boring the choices are. Good thing that they addressed that.
