Debunking 6 Notorious Mattress Myths
Finding the right mattress can sometimes be a really frustrating experience. It seems simple at first glance but when you scratch the surface a bit you will find a plethora of different sizes, materials, manufacturers and what not, and how are you supposed to know what suits your needs best and what are you even supposed to look for? Let’s break it down by debunking some of the popular beliefs and myths about mattresses:
Mattresses are too expensive
Sure, mattresses can be expensive, but no price is too high when we’re talking about the quality of our sleep. That’s one aspect of our budget where we really should not get stingy and try to cut corners. Our sleep is the most important means of rest, especially for busy, working people and quality should definitely be prioritized over low price. You will find out that there’s a huge difference between a discount mattress and a natural hybrid mattress as explained here: https://mattressmakers.com/latex-hybrid-mattress-101/
Bigger is not always better
A bigger mattress does not guarantee comfort or better sleep in particular. You should consider buying a mattress that suits your basic needs and think about available space at home as well as the size of your bed. If you share your bed, a twin mattress or king or queen mattresses could be the right solution. The same mattress simply cannot offer the same quality for a 100-pound woman and a 200-pound man. Many factors like person’s age, weight, height and sleeping position, and habits should be taken into consideration before choosing just the correct one.
You can’t try before you buy
This topic is closely related to the previous entry, as the only way to truly test a mattress is to actually sleep on it. You cannot really do that at the store. You should be able to buy it, take it home, test it and then return it or change it if you are not satisfied. Pay attention; many companies have very strict return policies and you need to be careful before buying. Try before buying? Absolutely – best case scenario is to make an agreement with the store, if possible, to give you a mattress for a test drive, you buy it and if it’s not good for you, return it or change it. Testing is very important because good mattresses are not that cheap, and finding the right one in a sea of possibilities is essential.
Mattresses are long-lasting
That is actually not true, a mattress should be changed once every 8 years or so because of pieces of dead skin, hair or nails that just keep piling up. It’s even worse if you have a pet. The best way to get rid of these is by treating yourself to a new mattress. Not everything can be cleaned up.
Mattresses are difficult to clean
The most efficient way to clean a mattress it is to use a vacuum cleaner to suck all the dirt out. You can also buy a topper to prevent staining or damage from spilled liquids.
Always go for the firm mattresses
This is absolutely not true! It’s like saying only one type of shoe fits everyone. We should keep in mindthat we are all different, so basically, there is no correct answer here. We should consider our own preferences and think about our health, and how we rest best. Your past experiences can be of great help here as only you know what is best for you.

We just bought a new one last year that is so great! It also comes with a warranty that if we feel it’s getting too mushy they will take it in and redo the inside.

Have you seen those little nattress vacuum robots. I really want want (ludicrous I know).

These are great thoughts for when you buy a mattress. They are an expensive investment, if you get a good one, so you need to know what to look for.

This is so good to know and I will have to remember these when it’s time for us to get a new mattress!

We just purchased a new mattress a few months ago. We had it for a while and then traded it in for a different one. So nice to be able to do that as we now have the mattress we both need!

The best thing you can do is invest in a quality made mattress. Not all are created equal, buy one with the proper built in springs that will last. Also, make sure it is flip-able, and then remember to flip it! Next best thing is to invest in a high quality mattress protector, that prevents dirt, skin cells, bugs, and spills from getting to your mattress.

This is all excellent advice. One of the best things we did was buy a mattress that suited out needs. It has dual controls, and is very long lasting. Before we go it, we were uncomfortable, and I woke up 4-5 times a night. You cant put a price on good sleep. Ours was pricey, and we had to save for it, but it was worth every cent.

This is really great!! Its so funny how old tales and old do’s and donts stick with us for so long! Like cleaning a mattress!! I remember having one practically wrapped in plastic wrap forever because “they are impossible to clean” lol!!

Thanks for sharing. I do agree that firm is not always the way to go. I don’t care for a firm mattress at all!

This was a very helpful post, thanks for sharing! We bought a new mattress last year and went from a queen to a king.
