I wanted to share with you guys how anti-bullying classes now exist! I know this is a problem that many of your kids see or even experience themselves.

I’m really shocked by how problematic bullying has become within schools. I was never a popular kid, but I had a few close friends and the rest mostly left me alone. I recall overhearing rude remarks here or there, but I never saw kids hit or bullied, with an exception of a fist fight between two boys in high school. From what I saw, they had a disagreement that got heated and then got physical so even that wasn’t really bullying in my opinion. It’s been about 8 years since I graduated high school. It doesn’t feel like that long to me. Yet, I don’t have any children in my life who haven’t experienced bullying themselves or witnessed it in their friends. Both of my nephews experienced bullying in Kindergarten! Not just a single incident, but one child repeatedly calling him names and even punching him on a few occasions. Generally speaking, his school is believed to be the best-ranked schools in our area, with a small student to teacher ratio and better resources than surrounding schools. I’ve heard that surrounding schools have even worse bullying problems. It just is so surprising to think of children that young having problems like that. I love seeing positive movements trying to fight back against bullying or raise awareness, like this anti-bullying walk.

Snapology offers anti-bullying classes to help kids regardless of what side of bullying they experience. The class discusses three perspectives – the bully, the victim and the bystander. The goal of the courses is to empower the bystander while empathizing with both the victim and the bully. The classes make learning about anti-bullying fun through engaging activities.

When bullying is an ongoing problem it can really impact children’s self-esteem in the long term. It’s a topic that the American Psychological Association has covered from the psychological perspective. Often victims feel like their options are limited, or even non-existent. I really like the idea of focusing on empowering bystanders because the victim can feel empowered through seeing that not everyone agrees with the bully, if nothing else.

I am so glad that this is all more out in the open now. In my day nobody dared even speak of it. Plus, look at you guys, so cute!

  • Emily, sounds like we have a lot in common besides calorie counting and GOT. I am trying to make an anti-bullying impact too. It’s a big issue in schools today.

    A. You didn’t need to tell me you were in the picture. I spotted you both right away. So cute!
    B. We had bullying even when I went to school (back in the stone ages, lol). I remember championing the underdog after having been an underdog myself. My kids and grandkids both saw bullying in their schools. It’s more prevalent than most people realize, so I’m really glad you wrote this article. Parents, teachers, and families of kids need to be aware of this so they can be proactive and watchful of signs that their child is being bullied or aggressive before it becomes a tragedy.
    Thanks for the eye opener!

I don’t know about the classes but my nephew has been bullied so much that they changed schools. His first day at the new school, he came home and said “The people are so nice there”. I cried, I did not realize just how bad it was.

This is such a great program! Bullying has become even worse I think. It seems like social media and texting have made it become easier and more vicious.

I wish schools were required to have an anti-bullying class for teachers and kids! My teen had a little bullying and we didn’t mess around with it but took it to the principal immediately who nipped it in the butt!

Our school had a different program come in and do a talk to my daughter’s school.

Bullying has always been an issue, but now there are just so many ways for it to happen. It is wonderful to hear that there are classes now that can help this growing issue.

My kids are homeschooled, but I can definitely remember my school days and I was bullied a lot. I love that they have classes, that is great! 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

I’m glad to read about this. No kids, so no immediate impact on me.

I love the pictures. I dont have kids in school anymore, and when I did there wasnt the bullying classes. Like you I remember getting picked on. I was a pretty quiet kid and only hung with neighbor kids so wasnt impacted so much. Nowdays I hear the kids always talking about posts on facebook and there have been actual fights on my street about it.

I am glad the schools now recognize bullying as a problem. As they say better late than never.
