I partnered with The Escape Game Minneapolis to create this post. As always, all opinions are my own.
Let me start by being upfront: yes, my family did get to play The Escape Game in exchange for this review. But spoiler alert—we happily paid for another round too! Not only that, we’ve been loyal customers for years, purchasing passes multiple times whenever we’re in the area. So trust me when I say we’ve truly put our money where our mouths are. This is one group activity you absolutely don’t want to miss!
NOTE: We visited The Escape Game at Mall of America but with over 50 locations, be sure to check for one near you!

The FUNNEST Group Activity: The Escape Game!
The Escape Game Minneapolis: The Disney World of Escape Rooms
Have you ever played an escape room game? If you have, you might think you know what to expect—but The Escape Game Minneapolis takes things to a whole new level. We have a couple of escape rooms close to home, but honestly? They don’t even come close to comparing. The Escape Game is worth the extra drive every single time.
Often referred to as “the Disney World of escape rooms,” this location truly lives up to the hype. Each game includes multiple rooms, and just when you think you’ve reached the end—surprise!—another room opens. The attention to detail, immersive sets, and clever puzzles make the entire experience feel like you’ve stepped into a movie.

Fun for All Ages & Experience Levels
One thing we love most about The Escape Game is that it’s designed for everyone. Whether you’re playing with family, friends, first-timers, or serious escape room enthusiasts; there’s something for all skill levels. Our group this time ranged in age from 11 to 50, and everyone had a blast.
Another huge bonus? Unlimited hints.
No penalties. No judgment. Ask for help as often—or as little—as you want. This makes the experience far less intimidating and a lot more fun, especially for families or newer players. I personally LOVE how you never have to ‘stay stuck’.

Our Game Choice: Prison Break
This visit, we chose to play Prison Break (and also paid to play The Depths, but I’ll focus this review on Prison Break). Rated a 9 out of 10 in difficulty, this is one of The Escape Game’s toughest challenges—and it did not disappoint.
We had the maximum eight players, which included my husband and me, five of our kids, and our son’s girlfriend. (Our youngest daughter stayed behind this time—she’s only 3.)

The Mission
You’re wrongfully imprisoned in Iron Gate, a 1950s-era prison run by a nefarious warden who enjoys manipulating his inmates like chess pieces. He’s offering you a single chance at freedom: one hour to escape. You’ll need to crack codes, uncover secret passages, and outsmart the warden at his own twisted game to break free.
To make things even more challenging, your team starts split into two separate prison cells—four people in each. This immediately raises the difficulty level and forces you to think strategically right from the start.

The Experience
Starting off separated definitely made things trickier. We were close enough to hear each other, but not close enough to see what the other team was working on. Communication became critical—sometimes we’d share information that turned out not to matter, and other times we’d stumble upon something that was exactly what the other group needed to escape their cell.
Once we both broke out, the pace picked up fast. There were codes to crack, puzzles to solve, and plenty of moments where everyone was working on something different at the same time. With eight people, we were able to divide and conquer pretty effectively—but we still hit a few sticking points and happily used those unlimited hints (which were incredibly helpful).
I also really appreciate how customizable the experience is. Before the game started, we asked our game guide to let us know if we were falling behind, since that would prompt us to ask for help. She did a fantastic job striking the perfect balance—available when we needed her, but never intrusive.

The Final Countdown
In the end, we escaped with less than two minutes to spare. It was stressful, exhilarating, and SO much fun. The kind of fun where you walk out buzzing with adrenaline and immediately start talking about which game you want to play next! —— We’re thinking Gold Rush! It’s the very first room we ever did years ago so none of our kids remember it. And for my husband and I, it’s still our all-time favorite so we’d love to try it again!

I’m a city girl turned country by my awesome husband and we have three busy boys and two darling daughters. I love spending time with my family, reading Karen Kingsbury novels, and catching up with friends while our kiddos have play dates.
