If you close your eyes and imagine the inside of your fridge – what is inside? Food, of course, but what is the food contained in? For me, the answer to this question was primarily plastic. In fact, aside from the box that my butter came in, just about every other product was covered in some kind of plastic.

I’ve known for a long time that plastic isn’t good for the environment, but until recently I didn’t know how great of an alternative paper cartons are.

To start with, over 42 million households have access to paper carton recycling. To see if you have access to carton recycling, check out the Recycle Cartons website. However, even for families who are unable to recycle the cartons, cartons are a a better option than plastic for other reasons. Did you know that paper cartons are made from 70% paper that comes from responsibly managed forests? They are manufacturer in plants that use 50% biomass which is a renewable energy source. And because cartons are more square or rectangular in shape than plastic containers, they use up less space during transport, making it more efficient to move them from the manufacturer to the store. For more information about cartons, check out the graphic below from the Choose Cartons website.

Given that there are so many benefits to using cartons, I hope to see more manufacturers offering their products in cartons instead of plastic. Until then, you can switch to cartons for products like milk, juice, soup, and broth.

If you use twitter and are interested in supporting the cause, use the hashtag #choosecartons while tweeting any fact about cartons, and it will help raise money for habitat for humanity. You can also follow Choose Cartons on Facebook and Twitter to stay informed

I wrote this review while participating in a campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Evergreen and received a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.
