Since turning 18 about five years ago, I’ve moved four times. With some of my apartments, we had to leave more in boxes or storage than others. Yet, it feels like each time we’ve moved we’ve come across at least one damaged item that wasn’t stored properly. During our more recent move, we found a box of framed photos and art prints where a couple of the frames had broken glass. Another time we stored loose printed photos (not in albums) in a box on a shelf in a closet and they got too warm and some of them stuck together, to where we couldn’t separate them without damaging one or both of the photos. We’ve learned to carry our framed products on our lap during trips to our new apartments, and we don’t store photos in hot or humid areas anymore. My kitchen is really small here, and the only storage in the kitchen is about 2 feet away from the oven. We quickly realized that using the build-in storage for our fruit and bread products didn’t work because the heat from the oven caused our bread to go stale in just 2-3 days.

I bet most people have had similar experiences that have taught them the hard way how to store certain household goods. Yet, a lot of products don’t blatantly get ‘ruined’ from being stored in the wrong way so without hearing from experts, it’s n early impossible to know the ideal way to store things like makeup or medication. I found this infographic that was released by Next Door Self Storage that I found really interesting. I didn’t realize that facial creams should be stored on the counter instead of a cabinet, for example.

Do you have any tips for storing certain household goods? I’d love to hear them!
