While I think almost everyone struggles with the balance between work and family life at some point, I think it’s a harder balance to strike while being self employed. For many people, stepping through their door at home is a clear signal that work time is over. I am self employed and work from home, so I sometimes do work from my kitchen, living room or bedroom so my location doesn’t signal work vs family mode. I am trying to work on cutting out blocks of my day or at least of my week that are exclusively family time or me time, but it’s been harder that I expected.
One of the ways that I am working on taking a break from work is by completing the #MilkLife challenge. This challenge has a goal of reminding people what life is really all about (hint – its not work!) by challenging people to do something small with their friends or family members each day. I’ve found the challenge really fun so far and even taking 10 minutes to unplug from my laptop and connect with people I love has been really relaxing for me. The Milk Life challenge also encourages you to include milk in your daily life. Spending time with my sisters kids always reminds me to include milk in my diet because they both love it. Milk has 8 grams of high quality protein and 9 essential nutrients in every 8 ounce glass! Having enough protein in my diet gives me the energy to stay active and get more done which means a higher quality of life. I’m trying to remember to start my day with milk so I get that boost first thing in the morning and make the most of each day.
For example, the May 19th challenge was to make up a bedtime story. I watched Kelsie that day and instead of singing her the usual nursery rimes that I sing while rocking her for her nap, I made up a song about what we had done that day. She surprised me by understanding what I was doing and chiming in and adding her own lyrics “and then we played on the slide..” etc. So cute!
The May 22 challenge was to spend time outside doing a fun activity. One of my favorite ways to play outside is to play t-ball or baseball with Drew. He graduated preschool last week and is playing t-ball this summer for the first time. He’s really into practicing right now and we’ve had so much fun watching him build his skills.
I feel like my entire life (including my work life) improves so much when I take time to disconnect and just enjoy life for a little while. I’ve found that I can always find a way to take at least 10 or 15 minutes to go for a walk with my boyfriend, cuddle with my dogs or play with my niece and nephew and it really helps the rest of my day run smoother.
If you want to join me in taking the #MilkLife challenge check out the Milk Life facebook page. Each day they’ll post an image with a new challenge for you to try that day. When you complete the challenge and share it on social media, you’ll be entered to win prizes!
How do you stay connected to your friends and family? Do you find that eating well and disconnecting from work and technology helps improve your quality of life?
