Since adopting (and coming to love) my two pugs Frank and Beans, I have turned into a complete sap when it comes to cute dog videos and stories, pet adoption stories and pet naming explanations. Frank and Beans were 8 and 9 years old when we brought them to live with us, so we didn’t name them and we’ve never been able to find out how their original owner decided on their names. However, we constantly get asked what their name story is seems how their names are so unique. When I get to name pets, I always go with serious-sounding, traditional names (to be ironic) or blatantly silly names. I love how Frank and Beans fit into my preferences for traditional and silly names even though I didn’t get to pick them.
As a child we got a puppy that was really small (under 15 pounds) so my mom thought she could ride home with it on her lap. It was so excited that it started trying to crawl up onto her shoulder mid-ride when she couldn’t really pull him back down. He settled behind her neck, laying across her shoulders and promptly fell asleep! It was so bizarre and silly that we later named him Cuddles as a result of the car-cuddling experience.
My hedgehog was named Henry and I had a hamster named Japedo (after the character from the Pinocchio story). Before adopting the pugs we had planned to adopt a pug puppy and our planned name was Leonard because it seemed like a silly name for a pug.
When I heard that there was an adorable dog video put out by IAMS about a dog named Duck, I knew I had to watch it. It’s such a cute little story about a boy and his dog, and the reasoning behind the name Duck is so adorable. Check it out below:
I got a little emotional thinking about my boyfriend Ryan and how he had a dog from the time that he was little up until he was about 22. Nothing quite compares to the bond that forms when a child is able to grow up with a dog at their side. It also got me emotional thinking about how my pugs are now 10 and 11. Even though we’ve only had them for two years now, they mean so much to me and i’m so thankful for the time that we’ve had to share together. The video really gets you thinking about how important it is to value and celebrate the meaningful connections that that come from the long term relationships we have with pets over their lifetimes.
The IAMS A Dog Named Duck video is the first campaign for IAMS that has been released since they became a part of Mars Petcare. IAMS™ ProActive Health™ products are fortified with vitamins and minerals to help your pets build strong bones. IAMS™ ProActive Health™ products are also enriched with antioxidants to help develop a strong immune system and strong firm muscles with protein sourced from egg and chicken.
How did you decide on a name for your pet(s)?

I have 5 cats and a bunny all with unique names. My oldest cat is Tater he is 9 now and we got him as a kitten. We started calling him Rush because he would zoom around the house in a rush but the kids decided he needed a middle name too. So he became Rush PuddinTater and now he is just Tater which suits him cause he is brown and round like a tater. I got Booble when she was about 4 weeks old a lady was going to take her to the pound she was so tiny. She started off with the name Katness Iris but I called her my lil Boo Boo kitty which got changed to Booble some how. Two years ago my daughter (age 14) came home from school and my neighbor’s cat had a litter of kittens. So she came in with the skinniest flea infested kitten and look at me with her big brown eyes and promised to take care of it. We named her Michonne Dixon because as little as she was she came in and ruled the house. Six months later the same neighbor had kittens again, but this time my daughter came home carrying two. They were scrawny and flea infested just like their older sister and I figured if I did not take them they would not make it long outside. So now we have Clementine Lee and MoJo Jackson ( after Jackson Galaxy my daughters idol). This year for her Birthday she wanted a baby goat. I was able to talk her down to a rabbit. She is in FFA and had to have an animal for her project so it all worked out. His name is Tokki Harryman. Tokki is rabbit in Korean.

I decided on a variation of my Yorkie’s name, because Spike just did not fit his sweet face. I had him for 18 wonderful years, like a kid and he was my first dog because we weren’t allowed to get a dog or cat when we were kids (nobody home to take care of it). They sure are part of the family.
We currently have 2 sets of littermates with very interesting name stories. I hope you don’t mind the novel on your blog 🙂
Rodrigo: I’ve always wanted a black and white cow and I said I’d name him Rodrigo. I saw City Slickers as a kind and the final scene of Billy Crystal running with his cow (Norman, I think) made me smile. I really should stop eating burgers. When my boyfriend and I went to an adoption event “just to ask questions” we saw Rodrigo (a black and white border collie / blue heeler mix) and we adopted him immediately and named him Rodrigo.
Sydney is Rodrigo’s sister. I wanted to name her Princess or Ava, because the rescue group said that I would treat her so well. She was the only girl in the litter and very shy. It was love at first site. My boyfriend wanted a name that he wouldn’t be ashamed to yell out at the dog park. Not Bailey. Not Haley. Finally, I said “Sydney?” Because she’s part Australian Cattle Dog. Her name is Sydney Australia.
Scout and Zoey are our puppies (although they’ll be 2 on Halloween). I made a long list of names, most were Marvel characters, I added Willow, Zander, Buffy and Angel to the mix, and finally Scout and Zoey. I didn’t know why I added Scout and Zoey, they just sounded good together. My boyfriend agreed. A month later, I realized that the reason Scout and Zoey sounded so good is because it’s the name of a dog treat company I love. I laugh that I didn’t make the connection.
That’s our story 🙂
