Years ago, I found a Lemon Flavored Roll-Out Cookie Recipe in a family magazine. I love almost anything lemon flavored so I tore it out and copied it into my recipe book. Months later, I finally took time to give it a try and boy-oh-boy, it’s been a favorite of everyone ever since. I made a couple changes but each holiday, the kids and I dig out the appropriate cookie cutters and get busy creating these amazing cookies.
Lemon Sugar Cookies Recipe
Ingredients:
~3 1/4 cups flour
~1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
~1/2 teaspoon salt
~1 1/4 cup butter
~1 cup sugar
~1 egg
~1 tablespoon milk
~1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
~1 tablespoon lemon flavoring
Frosting:
~3 cups powdered sugar
~1 teaspoon vanilla extract
~1 tablespoon lemon flavoring
~food coloring, optional
~small amount of water
Instructions:
In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter on medium speed for 30 seconds. Add sugar. Beat until combined.
Add egg, milk, vanilla, and lemon and beat well.
Beat in as much of the flour mixture (from your medium bowl) as possible with the mixer. Stir in remaining flour.
Divide dough in half and form into balls.
Cover and chill for 1 hour so it’s easier to handle.
After 1 hour, preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface. Cut with desired shapes and place 1″ apart on an un-greased cookie sheet.
Bake for 8-10 minutes or until edges are firm and barely light brown.
Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
Combine all frosting ingredients into one bowl and stir well. Frost cool cookies.
Enjoy!
These cookies never last long in our house! We also give them out at Christmas because everyone loves them so much. They are light and offer the perfect amounts of sweetness and lemon.
I’m a city girl turned country by my awesome husband and we have three busy boys and two darling daughters. I love spending time with my family, reading Karen Kingsbury novels, and catching up with friends while our kiddos have play dates. I’m blessed beyond measure and can’t wait to see what God has in store.

Oh double lemon flavor–in the cookie dough AND the frosting. That must be the key. I just make regular sugar cookies with lots of vanilla, so I must try this one. For some reasons, I have a ton of Halloween cookie cutters, but for me, it really is the most fun holiday. I love those bats!

I’d like to try this, I love the idea of the lemon to use with my new springy cookie cutters – flowers, watering can, etc. I tried using real lemon juice and it doesn’t come out as good as using flavoring, like this recipe, uses quite a bit should be perfect!

These look delicious!! I love lemon cookies… can’t wait to try these. Is the lemon flavoring the same as lemon extract? I’ve never seen the flavoring in my grocery store (or maybe I just haven’t noticed it!). 🙂
