I have no problem getting my kids to eat fruits and veggies with their meals. They enjoy fruits and veggies and are often the first thing they eat on their plates.
Snack time is a totally different story. They gravitate towards sweet and salty snacks that aren’t necessarily the best options. We sat down as a family to talk about why we need to choose nutritious foods rather than foods that simply satisfy a craving. We came up with a list of healthy snacks to buy and/or to make and have on hand.
One of the things my daughters mentioned were kale chips. I had made them before in the oven, but they had come out burnt on the edges. My friend told me she makes kale chips in her food dehydrator, along with several other healthy snacks. I set out to find a food dehydrator. I found a great deal on the Nesco FD-75PR Digital Dehydrator at PleasantHillGrain.com.
The Nesco FD-75PR Digital Dehydrator has a top mounted fan and heater, perfect for foods that contain a good amount of liquid. Users can easily adjust the digital thermometer to fit their needs. A handy guide gives you temperature and drying time suggestions. The Nesco FD-75PR Digital Dehydrator comes with 4 trays, plus a fruit leather/jerky mat.
As soon as our Nesco FD-75PR Digital Dehydrator arrived, we ran to the grocery store for a bag of kale. I was in a hurry so I grabbed a bag of chopped kale. I washed our kale and then tossed it in a bowl with a little extra virgin olive oil and a lite amount of pink Himalayan sea salt. I spread the kale out evenly on all four trays. I used the included guide to determine what temperature and drying time to set on the dehydrator. Ding! Our kale chips were ready. Cheyenne (my seven year old) was super excited to be the first to try them. She loved our homemade kale chips!
I look forward to using our Nesco FD-75PR Digital Dehydrator more this summer when our garden starts to produce.

Hello, my name is Laurie. My family and I live near the Oregon coast. When we aren’t at work, in school, or on the volleyball court, we enjoy traveling, cheering for our favorite sports teams, playing outdoors, and checking off items on our bucket list. We are lucky in that both sets of our parents, as well as our siblings and their families, live within an hour of us. We get together often to help one another out, celebrate milestones, and go on adventures together.

My daughter who is vegan would absolutely love the Nesco FD-75PR Digital Dehydrator. I enjoy Kale chips and would want to make that first!

I have one of the older style dehydarter. I like it, but it seems to not only take forever, but it seems uneven. I like how this one has a fan, and a timer. I too have never had good luck with kale in the oven, it burns quickly. Mine came out looking and tasting like charred pieces of paper.

I have a few Nesco dehydrators on my wish list, as a replacement for my very old dehydrator that is still working but limited. I can’t wait to make kale chips. I like to use nutritional yeast on the dehydrated veggies so they taste better.

I have a Nesco dehydrator, and never thought to make kale chips with it. I have only used it once! I’m thinking of selling it, b/c when I got it, I thought I was moving to the country where I was going to have access to a lot of fruit. Mine has about 7 or 8 trays.
I was just looking for a dehydrator on Amazon this morning. I will have to go over to Pleasant Hill Grain and see what they have. Thank you for the review.
