Thank you to Nutrisystem for providing me with products in exchange for this honest blog review. All opinions are 100% my own.

Did you know that approximately 30% of Americans aren’t getting a good night’s sleep? I know, I don’t consistently get a good night’s sleep. I have anxiety issues. Their are many nights where I simply cannot turn off my brain. It isn’t that I am necessarily worried about something, it’s often that I simply cannot stop going over the day’s events. Once I fall asleep, I wake in the middle of the night and am wide awake.

Getting the proper amount of sleep can help boost your mood and energy level, as well increase your focus and memory. Studies show that sleep is also good for your heart and immune system.

When you aren’t getting enough sleep, your hormones that control hunger becomes out of whack. When your hormones aren’t balanced, it can change your metabolism, thus causing weight gain. Not getting enough sleep also increases your risk for cancer, hypertension, diabetes, depression, heart attacks, strokes, and more.

How much sleep should you be getting each night? A general guide for adults is to get between seven and nine hours of sleep each night. If you need help reaching this goal, here are a few suggestions I found on Nutrisystem’s website:

  • Stick to a sleep schedule. Try going to bed and waking at the same time each day. Having a routine helps keep your biological clock on schedule.
  • Workout first thing in the morning. Having a strenuous workout close to bedtime interrupts your restorative stages of sleep.
  • Keep a journal. If something is bothering you, talk about it or write it down in a journal. This may help reduce your stress so you can fall asleep quicker.
  • Be aware of what and when you are eating dinner. Try to eat dinner between two and three hours before bedtime. Also, make sure you aren’t eating heavy foods or foods that cause you digestion issues. Avoid caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol late in the evening as well.
  • Unplug before bed. About an hour before bedtime, dim the lights and turn off all electronic devices. Durning that hour, wind down with a good book, hot shower/bath, or try yoga/meditating.

I look forward to trying a few of these tips tonight. Good night. Rest well!
