Thank you goes to Futura Genetics for providing me with product in exchange for review purposes. All opinions belong to me.

How cool would it be to know what your specific genetic risks are for certain conditions diseases and ailments? I personally thought it would be very cool! Not only did I think it would be cool but also very useful to see what I could be more at risk for and then make some life changes in order to help my body in preventing those types of conditions.

I turned to Futura Genetics to get a saliva DNA test done for both me and my husband. All that we knew about our health at this point was that it was good as we weren’t suffering from anything and also that health history of our parents and grandparents. On my side my maternal grandmother suffered from a lot of heart issues but she also drank and smoked which only worsened those issues. I have no info about my maternal grandfather. Regarding my paternal grandmother there are no health issues and my paternal grandfather is a cancer survivor along with some heart issues.

Knowing as much as I can about my health history and my genetics really helped me make choices that will encourage my body to be and stay healthy. My results were pretty interesting to read! Futura Genetics  detects the likelihood of developing 28 common conditions. Among those conditions are things like diabetes, melanoma, Alzheimer’s, Celiac’s, Rheumatoid Arthritis and so many more. My great grandmother suffers from rheumatoid arthritis so I was interested to see if my genetic code would show a higher likelihood.

I found that almost all of my test scores from Futura Genetics coincided with information I had about my family history which was a nice confirmation for me. I also found that some of the tests for things like obesity were a bit higher than the average population which I found strange since my whole life I’ve never gained any extra weight, and have an incredibly hard time putting it on let along keeping it on. In Futura Genetics information it is outlined that genetic testing isn’t necessarily saying you will get or have these diseases but your likelihood of developing them based on the genes that are studied to coincide with those diseases. So apparently I just haven’t turned those genes on so to speak.

I was glad I had the testing done so that I could better analyze the heart issues that run in my family. Right after having this test done I went to the doctor and had routine blood work ran and found that despite being only 27 and relatively active and healthy I had high cholesterol. In my genetic testing I only had a slightly higher than average risk of coronary heart disease but even still I found it important to make some drastic dietary changes. My Futura genetic testing also showed that I was at a 90% risk for Type 2 diabetes versus the average risk of 39%. The recommendation following that information is to avoid being overweight, exercise regularly, avoid alcohol, and smoking and control blood pressure.

My husband was relieved to find out that his Alzheimers risk was only a 6% risk compared to the average population risk of 10%. This was something he was very concerned and afraid of in relation to getting older. Putting his mind at ease with that was really cool.

To get your own DNA Analysis done you only need to log onto Futura Genetics, pay the fee and then within a few days you will be sent a package. Within that package is a register number and a saliva collection tube. The next steps are very simply explained on the box regarding the tube and contents and how to ship it back. It took about 3 weeks for our results to come back in electronic form but took quite a bit longer for our paper booklets containing the same information to arrive. Pretty easy process overall with pretty awesome customer support along the way if needed.

If they had this test 30+ year ago would I have taken it? I don’t think so. What if it told me I had a big percent chance of having this/that disease, and there is nothing to stop it. Am I going to worry about it the rest of my life.

If I had that test… I don’t know if I would have done anything like I would today. I wish I had taken better care of myself starting earlier.

Very interesting post, thank you so much for sharing! My dad did a similar test along with my oldest brother a couple of years ago and now I really want to do one myself! I think it is so cool to look at their results, and they were spot on! I am definitely going to look into getting a test for myself.

It’s interesting what you can discover these days with genetic testing. I haven’t done it.
