Children learn through play and play while they learn. I love watching our kids grow and mimic the things they see us do. One of the first “games” that many young children tend to pick up is talking on the phone. It’s a fact of life that most people communicate through phones these days. I was really surprised that our youngest, now 16 months, picked up, not the phone game, but “playing puppy” as his first game. I love watching him crawl around with his tongue slightly out pretending. None of our older three started the puppy game this young. I also enjoy finding companies that make products to enhance learning through play and one I’ve come to really enjoy working with is Learning Resources. I was able to partner again to bring you this review.

The New Sprouts Ring It Up Cash Register – My very own cash register is geared for children ages two to four but all of our children, ages one through eight, have been enjoying playing with it. This cash register is brightly colored and very eye catching to the children. I like that there are minimal buttons, so as not to overwhelm younger children. Each button, when pushed and held, aligns with fruit or vegetables on the screen in the same number. So if you push the three button, the number three along with three yellow bananas will appear on the rolling screen.

The kids went straight away to playing market with the Ring It Up Cash Register. They had a great time buying and selling fruits and vegetables and playing store. All in all, this register has some great features. It is easy to use, nice colors, simple structure, and the kids use their imaginations during play. With that said, I would love to see some changes. Within five minutes of play, our three year old dropped a coin in the slot while the drawer was open and it is now stuck inside. By the end of the day, we were down two coins. I know they may end up getting lost anyway but I would love to see a “slot” in the back where misplaced coins could be easily retrieved by tipping the cash register side ways.  The only other thing I can think of would be a pretend scanner could be attached to the side with a short string or cord so the children could pretend to scan their purchases.  However, none of the kids seemed to mind not having a scanner.

All in all, this is a great play register that should last.  It feels like it is made well but not overly heavy so it is easy to move wherever playing is happening.  The kids are really happy with the Ring It Up Cash Register and have spent hours including it in their play.
