Peachtree YA Books. Peachtree has a great section of young adult books that will appeal to tween and teenage girls who enjoy reading. My niece likes to read and I picked out The Theory Of Everything and This Girl Is Different both by J.J Johnson for her.
The Theory of Everything is about a teen girl whose best friend died in a car accident and her attempts to “pull herself together” over a year later as she is still struggling with the loss of her friend. All of her other friends have “moved on” and she can’t help but feel stuck on her grief. While this book would be a wonderful read for teenagers who have lost a friend or family member, I think it will be relatable for teens who haven’t as well. I remember being in high school and feeling as if I couldn’t “get over” certain tough aspects of life and feeling like I needed to. Yet, simply feeling like I should move on or get over the pain didn’t mean that I knew how. So many books that delve into the concept of dealing with “tough stuff” during the teen years come off as preachy which was a big turn off for me as a teenager. However, I could get deeply interested in books that simply told the story of someone going through something tough and how they got through to the other side, like The Theory Of Everything does.
This Girl Is Different is about a home-schooled girl who tries out public school for the first time in her life as a high school senior. She was raised differently than her public-school peers and struggles to find her place inside of the social limits of high school because her perspective on life, relationship and rules are so unique. It’s designed to spark discussions about authority, boundaries, friendships and confidence which are relevant topics in almost any teens life.
