DIY homemade Modeling Clay Recipe. Neat craft to entertain kids on a rainy day or while babysitting.

The classic “The Cat In The Hat” book I grew up reading had two little kids who were sad to see the weather turn yucky, as yucky as can be.  So they started to have fun, in the house all round, till trouble was happening, trouble abound.

To curtail those same issues from our own little crew, I try to find fun things for everyone to do.  Some times we play games, some times we dance, listen to music, like horses we prance.  Other times we get busy, busy as bees.  Playing with clay we’ve created, making anything we please.

NCircle Entertainment Presents: The Cat In The Hat Oh Say, What's The Weather Today?

So what do you do, when the weather is bad?  Do you make crafts or do you get sad?  If you want to have something fun to do, create an art exhibit, perhaps of a zoo!  For the clay that we use, it’s soft and it’s fun but use it quickly, within two days it’s done.

Home Made Modeling Clay Recipe:

  • 4 Cups Flour
  • 1 Cup Salt
  • 1 1/2 Cups Water
  • Medium Size Bowl
  • Food Coloring (Optional)

Combine the flour and salt in a bowl.  Add water (and food coloring if you so choose) and mix well.
Kneed until the dough becomes smooth.
Create sculptures and art!
If you want to preserve, bake finished pieces in oven on the lowest temp (our oven is 200 degrees) for 6 to 8 hours or until hardened.
Dough will harden if left out but only lasts for a couple days before becoming “gooey” when bagged up.

That is very good for a HOT day here too. It does not have to be raining so they don’t want to go outside. Thank you for the information.

This would be great for the kids here in SoCal. We have a double whammy right now of horrible air quality with all the fires, and stifling, triple-digit heat! They have warned people who have breathing problems to stay indoors and with kids, I’m sure it’s hard to keep them entertained. Cat in the Hat is one of my favorites.
