With fall in the air, there’s also parties happening everywhere! And the kind of parties you may especially be hearing about are barn dances! Have you ever been to a barn dance? While I’ve been hearing of this phenomenon for several years now, we finally attended our very first one. And we had a blast! The kids did NOT want to leave!
Have You Ever Been To A Barn Dance Party?
Since this was our first experience, I wasn’t entirely sure of what to expect. However, our friends did an AMAZING job! They went over and beyond our wildest dreams. So what was all happening? Keep reading to find out.
Must Have Food
Shortly after arriving, the food was ready and a great spread was laid out. While I forgot to grab a photo, the menu included:
- Grilled Chicken
- BBQ Pork Sandwiches
- Baked Beans
- Hotdogs
- Creamed Cucumbers
- Fresh Veggies
- Watermelon
- Lemonade
- And More
And dessert was a caramel apple bar! Sliced apples, hot caramel, and a bunch of topping options! Things such as chocolate chips, sprinkles, nuts, and more.
Snacks
Not only was there a delicious supper, once the band started, they also provided a salsa bar! There were three different kinds of chips and about a dozen different varieties of homemade salsa. YUM!
Yard Games & Scavenger Hunt
Also set up and going all afternoon were a variety of yard games as well as a scavenger hunt. There was a bean bag toss, giant jenga, lawn darts, and more. The scavenger hunt was set through a path in a small area of woods.
Hay Rides
Throughout the afternoon and evening, hay rides were given sporadically. They had a trailer hooked up behind a tractor. And inside were straw bales for the riders.
Decorations
To help set the mood, the right decorations need to be used. Lights are a great way to help too. But fall colors, leaves, pumpkins, and old farm products are all perfect choices!
Seating
Of course, any good party has seating for guests. And to go along with the Barn Dance Party theme, there were hay and straw bales in and around the barn.
Kids Movie
There was a little mini theater set up in one of the rooms off to the side. In it, there was more hay and straw bale seating along with a projector! They showed a movie full of short clips. The kids LOVED it!
Beverages
Summer decided to rear its head one last time on the day of the Barn Party Dance. So it was HOT! Having delicious lemonade and hard apple cider on hand for the guests kept everyone hydrated.
Glow Sticks
Because the party ran into the night, the kids all had a blast playing with glow sticks. They wore them as necklaces and bracelets. And they also looped them together and used as frisbees to throw around outside. This kept the kids busy for HOURS!
And Finally, MUSIC!
It wouldn’t be a barn party dance without some live music! So having a band on hand to perform and entertain the guests was the absolute perfect finishing touch.
So tell me, have you ever been to a barn party dance before?
I’m a city girl turned country by my awesome husband and we have three busy boys and two darling daughters. I love spending time with my family, reading Karen Kingsbury novels, and catching up with friends while our kiddos have play dates. I’m blessed beyond measure and can’t wait to see what God has in store.

Looks like a fun time. I have been to a barn dance, but many, many years ago.

That looks like so much fun. I wish there were one near us. I live in a rural area, we could have it.

I have never been to a barn dance before but it sounds like a blast! I loved living in the country and miss it so much! Hayrides and bonfires are my favorite things as well. 🙂

I am from Iowa, so actually my answer is a yes!! Some pretty fancy, some not so, but all good fun. My brother is in a band (nothing famous) and he likes doing stuff like this. One we went on a hayride, and did the whole day. It is usually kid friendly, and seeing the kids play is fun. One was combined with a haunted house.
