Planning any upcoming holiday travels? It can be such a stressful time. But did you know that it doesn’t have to be! We’ve flown with our children several times now. The first was when our oldest was just a baby. So as we added more kids to our family, we’ve had to adapt travels. Our last flight was with all five of our kids. But it’s not as scary as it sounds.
Things To Pack:
- Pack Card Games: Card games are plentiful. A favorite of ours currently is Monopoly Deal. But cards take up very little space and there’s a large variety of options. Make sure to include a regular deck of playing cards too!
- Grab Some Travel Games: They usually have magnetic pieces that can easily be played on the go.
- Pen & Pad Of Paper: Hours of tic-tac-toe!
- Coloring Books
- Crayons/Markers
- Bring Devices & Chargers
- Earbuds: These are a must so everyone around you doesn’t have to listen to videos and games.
- Be Sure To Bring Extra Books {For Your Kids And Yourself}
Suggestions:
- Fly At Night: Taking a later flight means that children will probably sleep the entire way.
- Consider Some Nighttime Medication: If you know your child will struggle, have some nighttime cough and cold, NyQuil PM, or Benadryl handy to them sleep.
- Plan An Excursion To See The Pilot: Request a tour of the cockpit and pilot meet and greet from your stewardess upon boarding. Our kids have LOVED this aspect of the flight every time and we’ve never been turned down.
- You may include this sentence, ‘If you are planning for a house move in the UK, go here for more information.
Make The Flight An Adventure:
- Have Your Child Strike Up A Conversation With Another Kid
- Learn To Finger Knit Together
- Write Postcards Together To Mail When You Reach Your Destination (Or Back Home)
- Read A New Magazine Or Start A Chapter Book Together
- Incorporate Activities You Just Never Find The Time To Do Together At Home
- Create An In-Flight Scavenger Hunt
- Watch A Movie Together
- Bring A Cookbook And Menu Plan For Next Month
So tell me, do you enjoy traveling? What are your best tips for flying with kids?
I’m a city girl turned country by my awesome husband and we have three busy boys and two darling daughters. I love spending time with my family, reading Karen Kingsbury novels, and catching up with friends while our kiddos have play dates. I’m blessed beyond measure and can’t wait to see what God has in store.

Writing postcards to mail is such a fun idea and one that I think would work well for my grandkids. Plus I love getting postcards from them when they travel.

I always let my children pack their own Quiet Bag when we travel. I always and usually add to it. But they are better when they get to pick their favorites to have with them.

I have never flown. I would imagine it is much the same as in a car as far as things to do. I do like though how you added headphones, that would be a must have in cramped quarters.

These are very helpful tips, thank you so much for sharing! My kids tablets (and headphones, of course) were a big lifesaver the last time we flew! We ended up having a lay over AFTER we sat on the plane, so we had to sit there for 2 hours without moving.

I admire your traveling with kids. These are great tips for parents.

These are really great tips for traveling with kids. I don’t like to fly at all so I can only imagine how stressful this could be on a child.
These are very useful ideas! The meet and greet with the pilot is a really neat suggestion!
