11 Things To Pack For A Fun-Filled Snow Trip With Kids {+ Shred Dog Review}

I received product to facilitate this post.  As always, all opinions are my own.

While I actually live where the snow flies, I know many people take trips to find that white fluffy stuff.  So no matter how you come into contact with it, this post will be for you as I’m sharing all the great items you’ll want to have for when you’re around snow!

I love summer because it’s so much easier to be outside.  Just walk out the door and go!  But when there is cold weather involved, there is so many more things to consider.  The elements can be dangerous so you want to make sure to have your family protected.  But there are also lots of fun activities you can enjoy in the snow as well.

1:) Layers

I’ll just start here.  Layers are probably one of the best ways to keep your family warm.  Before you even get to the OUTER LAYERS, you’ll want to start with a thin base layer.  Basically, you will end up with three layers.  A base layer to wick away moisture.  A middle layer of warmth.  And a top layer that provides both warmth as well as protection against moisture and wind.

We suggest you choose Shred Dog’s brand new baselayer top as it’s softer and more comfortable than merino wool, but retains body heat while wicking moisture (“sweat-free sensation”).  It has a deodorizing effect, features thumbholes, and has a 1/4-Zip for easy on and off.   {These will be available on their website soon so keep checking back!}

Base 1:  Start with a long sleeve (long underwear) set.

Base 2:  A fleece top and and pants.

Base 3:  Great coat and snow pants.

Special Notes:  The base 2 layer is really only necessary in conjunction with our Shred Dog Gear in super cold weather and activities with less exertion.  Because Shred Dog’s 3M thinsulate puffy jacket, shell, and convertible pants can keep kids warm when skiing in 0 degree weather, even without that base number 2!  But sitting still in -10 degree weather, perhaps that extra fleece is needed though!  So keep reading to learn more about why Shred Dog is a great choice!

Shred Dog Gear

For our 3rd layer, we turned to Shred Dog Gear.  You may remember my earlier review of their Hardshell and Insulator Coats.  These coats offer their layers individually, as opposed to the typical insulated hard-shells that are one piece.  So you can choose to use the insulator jacket or hard-shell separately if the weather is nice.  But they can also be used together as a “3-in-1” configuration for cooler weather.

Convertible Bib Pants

So now that you’ve got the coat covered, you’ll also want to find the best pair of snow pants to complete your outer layer as well.  That’s where the Convertible Bib Pants comes in.  They are designed with you and your child in mind!

Designed To Last Longer With Adjust-A-Fit

Shred Dog’s Adjust-A-Fit system allows their sleeves and pant legs to be extended and reduced in length by 1.5 inches.  We all know kids grow really fast and high-performance outdoor gear is quite expensive.  So Shred Dog wanted to create products their customers could use longer and then pass down to siblings as well.  Watch this video to see this system demoed:

Waterproof And Breathable

I love how Shred Dog Gear has designed their convertible pants with a 50% higher performance than the industry average!  They know a high waterproof and breathability rating is essential to keep kids dry.  It’s a feature that parents love because it helps keep kids protected!

Fully Seam Taped

Rest assured that every single seam on your Shred Dog Convertible Snow Pants is taped.  No short cuts here.  Shred Dog does it right so no matter how much rolling around in the snow your child does, the seams will not let it through.  They will be ultra protected.

3M Thinsulate Insulation

Zippered Thigh Vents

Shredding is hard work. Zippered thigh vents allow kids to easily dump heat and stay comfortable on the mountain and anywhere else they are playing in the snow.

Reinforced Knees, Instep, & Hem

Kids are hard on gear so Shred Dog has reinforced the high wear areas to help withstand wipeouts, walking in boots, and playing in the snow.  The durability is top notch on their gear.

Kids are hard on gear so we reinforced the high wear areas to withstand wipeouts, walking in boots, and playing in the snow.

Bib Or Pants Option

As implied in the name, these CONVERTIBLE bib pants offers two options for wear!  The bib part is removable so kids can wear this piece as a bib or just a regular snow pant if they prefer.  So as you can see, we’re huge fans of Shred Dog Gear!  Their products really do stand out above the competition and we highly recommend them!

2:) Warm Wool Socks

Warm feet help keep the rest of your body feeling warm.  Wool socks are a must.

3:) Snow Boots

Tip: When buying snow boots, make sure the kids try them on WITH their wool socks.  I usually have to size up with winter boots by at least 1-2 sizes from their normal shoe size.

4:) Hat

Find a hat that also covers the ears.

8:) Ski Goggles

These will actually help protect eyes against the snow, wind, and sun.

9:) Sports Equipment

Make a list of all the snow activities you’re planning on doing.  Then either pack, buy, or rent the equipment so you can experience a variety of activities.

10:) Snow Sleds

If traveling, consider purchasing inflatable snow tubes as they take up less room.  But a visit to a snowy area means that sledding down a big snow hill is a must FOR ALL AGES!

11:) Lip Balm

Cold, snowy weather means dry, chapped lips.  Be sure to stock up on lip balm for everyone and make sure you DON’T lick your lips!
