Year & Day Review: Beautiful Kitchen Essentials You’ll Actually Use Every Day
I was pretty young when my husband and I got married… just 20 years old. As you can probably imagine, when you’re just starting out at that age, there wasn’t a lot of extra money to spend on making our home look picture-perfect. Pretty much everything we bought was “budget friendly.” It got the job done, but most of it wasn’t what I’d call beautiful. And honestly? A lot of those things have stuck around for a LONG time.
Now that we’ve been married for almost 23 years, we’re finally at a point where I can start replacing some of those old household staples with pieces I truly love. A few years ago, we remodeled a large portion of our house, and then the following year, we added on. With our major projects finally behind us, I’ve slowly turned my attention to upgrading some of our “stuff.” And when I say slowly, I mean it. We still have potholders we received as wedding gifts! And they’ve definitely seen better days.
But upgrading your home doesn’t have to mean replacing everything at once. Sometimes it’s the smaller, everyday pieces that make the biggest difference. That’s exactly what drew me to Year & Day. Their kitchen and tabletop pieces combine the functionality I need with a clean, timeless style I’m now looking for. I recently had the opportunity to check out two of their pieces; the Rectangular Baker and Utensil Crock, both in the gorgeous Moon color. And they’re exactly the type of upgrades I’ve been wanting for our kitchen.
Year & Day Rectangular Baker
If there’s one type of cookware that gets plenty of use in our house, it’s a good casserole dish. Between casseroles, lasagna, baked pasta dishes, desserts, and everything in between, a rectangular baker is one of those kitchen essentials I find myself reaching for again and again.
The Year & Day Rectangular Baker takes that everyday workhorse and makes it a whole lot prettier. This baker features softly curved corners, rounded handles, and Year & Day’s semi-matte glaze. At 15″ long by 9.5″ wide, it has a generous 117.5-ounce capacity and even comes with a matching lid! (So much better than my old coverless go-to which required foil every time a recipe called for it to be covered.) It’s also dishwasher, freezer, and microwave safe and can go into the oven at temperatures up to 480°F. I make a lot of homemade meals and desserts. So that versatility is a HUGE selling point for me.
But what really sets this baker apart from some of the baking dishes I’ve accumulated over the years is that I actually want to put this one on the table! There’s no need to bake a casserole and then transfer it into a prettier serving dish before company arrives. The Rectangular Baker easily transitions from oven to table, which means fewer dishes to dirty while still giving your table a beautiful, put-together look.
Year & Day Utensil Crock
The Year & Day Utensil Crock is a much simpler upgrade. But it’s also one I get to enjoy every single day. I like having my most-used kitchen utensils right beside the stove. It’s convenient when I’m cooking, but that also means whatever I’m storing them in is permanently sitting on my countertop.
Year & Day’s Utensil Crock is made from the same semi-matte ceramic used throughout its gorgeous dinnerware collection. It measures 6 inches in diameter and 7 inches tall, giving it plenty of room for everyday cooking tools. It easily stores things like spatulas, wooden spoons, whisks, and tongs. And because it’s dishwasher safe, it’s easy to give it a thorough cleaning whenever needed. This is a simple, substantial item that doesn’t add unnecessary clutter to the counter.
Function Meets Style = Final Thoughts On My Year & Day Review
At this stage in my life, I don’t want to buy things simply because they’re pretty. We’re a busy farming family, and our kitchen gets USED every day. Anything taking up cupboard or counter space needs to earn its keep. But I’ve also moved beyond the stage where I want to choose something simply because it’s the cheapest option available. I want both. That’s where Year & Day comes in. Their items are practical enough for everyday life and beautiful enough to make those everyday moments feel just a little more special.
It’s funny how my priorities changed over the years. At 20, I was happy to have a kitchen stocked with the basics. I didn’t care if everything matched or whether the casserole dish looked pretty sitting on the table. We were building a life together, and inexpensive pieces were exactly what we needed at the time. Almost 23 years later, I’m grateful those things served us so well. But I’m also enjoying this new season of slowly replacing them with pieces I truly love. The Year & Day Rectangular Baker and Utensil Crock are exactly the kind of upgrades I was looking for.
